        Hello,

So for the past three days my bunny finally started to go out of his cage. At first I was super excited about this. Because for me if meant that my rabbit was enough confortable in his cage to go out of it. It immediately started to bunny proof my room and try to decide when I wanted him to go back into his cage. So fortunately he went back to his cage by his on at 6 PM so I close the enclosure at 8 PM. But Around 9 PM he started to chew the bats and try to pass his head through the holes. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to leave him outside of his cage when I’m asleep cause it’s too soon for me and for him. But it’s also kind of hard to see him like this. I don’t want him to hurt himself trying to escape. PLEASE HELP!!! LOVE 💕 Y’ALL

How big is his “cage”? Is it an actual cage? Like, pet store cage?

If it IS a pet store cage, that’s why. Rabbits need lots of space <3 and if he does have lots of space, then I’m sorry if it seemed like an accusation! Can’t help much past that, but if it’s a CAGE cage then that’s the problem. Most pet store cages are too small for even rats.

Agree with @dove it could be that his cage is too small. Have you considered and x-pen? It is making a pen that is bigger than the standard “pet store cages” and allows your bun more room to move around. If you google ‘rabbit x-pen’ there are some examples of what they look like. Then you could drape a lite towel – I don’t like heavy ones – on the side where he could see your room, for to him, he is looking at more territory, and it is frustrating that he can’t get to it, so if you block it off from view, not so much that he can’t breathe, I like to only cover one side so that all of the other sides allow airflow. That should hopefully stop the digging. Also, is he neutered? Unneutered rabbits tend to be more aggressive, and overall not fun to be around. So if he is not neutered, neutering could take away the sharp edges.

If he can fit his head through bars, then you will need to reinforce it with some smaller grids so he doesn’t hurt himself. You could use smaller mesh hardware cloth or NIC cube grids.

Some bunnies just hate barriers! Even when they have lots of space. Hanging up a towel on the side he’s obsessed with might help too.

Once things are bunny-proofed hopefully he can just have more roam time and it will be less of an issue.

Clover can open a lot of pens and she knows it so I have to use a clip to keep them closed and she just goes to town trying to force her way through because it’s worked before! That said she behaves much better when she gets as much play time as possible. It sounds like your bunny is new and you guys are just figuring each other out so give him some time to get into his routine. After he gets used to being there I think you’ll find that he might not be ready to go home at 6 and might play more until you put him to bed closer to 8 and hopefully that will wear him out so he behaves better. Make she he has some fun stuff in his pen like cardboard to chew on, lots of hay, some toys so he won’t be so bored when he’s home. You’ll have to try different toys to see what he likes but a toilet paper tube filled with hay is always popular and very inexpensive too.
