Hi. I’m new here. I’ve had my two mini rex bunnies for a year now, and one of them, Peter, is always sneezing. He has been for the whole time I’ve had him. At first, I thought he might have snuffles, but he never got worse or better. He goes into sneezing fits, and try’s to clean his nose with his paws. His paws never really get matted, though. He also doesn’t seem to groom himself as much as him brother, Benji. I feed them Sherwood timothy pellets, and they get hay in giant bales from the feed store. Is he maybe allergic to something? They use to live in an large enclosure on our covered porch, and I though he might have been allergic to the treated wood, but they’ve since moved and Peter’s still sneezing. Help!

He could be allergic to something like the hay. Have you tried different types of hay?

Another thought would be chronic irritation of the sinuses. How old are they? Have you considered tooth-related problems? Tooth roots growing into the sinus cavity can cause chronic sneezing.

They are two years old. We recently ran out of their old hay, and had to quickly buy some at Tractor Supply, but I’ve been out of town, and haven’t been able to keep a very close eye on that. I’ve never heard of chronic irritation of the sinuses. What is it? His teeth are healthy as far I know, and they have plenty or wood and cardboard to chew on.

Tooth roots growing upward into the sinus cavity can cause chronic irritation. The first symptom is often unexplained sneezing. Tooth problems and tooth root problems can go hand-in-hand. However, tooth root problems can occur without problems with the actual teeth. Just something to keep in mind if you can’t figure out what is causing the sneezing. If it isn’t a URI and it isn’t allergies, there aren’t a lot of other possibilities other than what I’m describing.

Is there any other way to tell if he has tooth root problems other than the sneezing?

                  X-rays can sometimes detect it.

Okay. Thanks! I’ll see if I can look into that a bit more, and also see if it might just be allergies.
