Today, I picked up my two newlyweds! They are sooo cute!!! Velvet immediately came up to me for scratches and pets and some love. She has become and incredibly sweet rabbit, I just love her so much!!! And then there is Dancer… He is so scared, he does not come to investigate anybody, he hides the second we look at him. The ride home was uneventful, they were very good in the carrier. When I brought them home, Velvet immediately came home, she knew right away where she was though I had gotten them a new rug and changed the x pen around and everything inside the pen, too. There is no fooling Velvet! She is so smart, she immediately recognized she was home. She had to pee right away. Just like mommy! Can’t be too long in the car, gotta go! Haha! Anyway, before picking them up, I stopped at a grocery store and loaded up on veggies. Many, many different kinds, so many, I don’t even know what I bought!
She is so good with Dancer! She is very patient! When their dad got home, she was cuddling Dancer in the box, which was PERFECT timing! He is not too fond of the fact that I snuck in the rabbits and that they won’t get adopted out (note: we were supposed to foster Velvet, that’s how she originally came to us). He saw them snuggling in the box, that was just too cute for words! It’s as if they had always been together! Dancer is actually older than we thought. He is around four, which is probably close to her age, too. They are definitely not young rabbits.

Right now, Dancer only eats when the light is off and we are not looking at him. She is full of confidence, while he is very, very shy. They are perfect for each other! It must feel so good to them to have each other and to comfort one another! I am so happy Velvet is happy!!! She is not protective of her things in the least bit. They share everything… mind you, when Velvet came here, I couldn’t even touch the x-pen without her freaking out and launching at me, wanting to eat me alive! Now, she shares her pellets, her salads, her pen, her humans… everything!

I am THRILLED!!! It took them exaclty one week only to be bonded. They have been together since last Sunday.

Please join me in my joy! Here are a few pictures of them… The first three were taken at 5:30 pm today, here at home.

This was at my friend’s place… She is the person in charge of HRS in San Diego. She is an angel of a person! So very compassionate and so very helpful! I am so fortunate to have her here! Without her, we wouldn’t have been able to do the bonding so flawlessly. She has the magic touch with bunnies!

Ralph Lauren mats for the bunnies!! Wow! Those buns sure are living like a celebrity.

That is so fantastic!!! Dancer will come around when he feels more secure.  Thank god they have each other. What a great story especially after all the bad news this week. Their coats are really gorgeous.  I’m so happy for you!  And I love the Ralph Lauren rug! Only the best for those buns!

Thank you all! Actually, I had never seen a rex rabbit before I saw Velvet. We didn’t choose to have rexes, they just came to us. Both from shelters. Velvet from a high kill shelter (her time was up) and Dancer from a Humane Society (better circumstances but he wasn’t going anywhere for 6 months). Both lived in shelters in cages for six months, both were rescued by SDHRS (San Diego House Rabbit Society).
Velvet was scheduled to be put to sleep, so HRS got her out just in time because we were willing to foster her while Dancer (his name was Max) was pointed out by a loving volunteer and pulled once we agreed to try bonding him to Velvet. Now, I have two bunnies in the dining room who not only are absolutely wonderful with each other but also so stunningly beautiful and handsome that I can’t stop staring at them!!!
Dancer’s face is very square and he is much bigger than she is though he has been losing weight (which he needed!). His feet are very fluffy while hers are rather petite and delicate and bare on the bottom.

I see them groom each other and cuddle – they are completely melting my heart away!!!

We are SO LUCKY to be owned by them too!!! Not only do we have 19 wonderful, wonderful rats, but now two awesome bunnies too!!!

Dancer will come around as he gets more comfortable. He has been through a lot!

eeeeeek!!!! they are so beautiful together! that must seriously just warm your heart. i wouldn’t be surprised if Dancer started to pick up on Velvet’s security. he will start to get used to you and he will be a good boy, i’m sure. he’s got the life… i bet he knows how good he has it. a kind caring home with good people and a beautiful wifey-bun. i want to pick them up and just bury my face in their fur… (guess i’ll just have to bury my face in Meadow’s fur… lol!)

edited to add:  what do they (a vet) say about Velvet’s feet?  they look pretty bad in that pic where she’s flopped.  as you know rexes are prone to sore hocks… are hers calloused over or are they still open?  do you have any vet-prescribed creams or is it too late for that?  i’m curious b/c my bun has always had a very slight case of sore hocks, the vet doesn’t think i need any cream tho.  i’m glad that Dancer is losing weight… obesity can definitely lead to sore hocks also.

HRS took her to the vet and apparently, her feet had been raw for a long time. When she came to us, she was way overweight and was kept on wire, but since I am such a health freak, we changed that. She got a lot more exercise than just sitting in a cage for months, she got a strictly measured amount of pellets (she would eat those like crazy!!! They are free-fed at the shelter) and pets instead of treats when she demanded attention. Doing something beneficial to our animals doesn’t mean we have to give them treats when they ask for them. We can give them attention instead too and that made Velvet very, very happy! So we lost the weight. Her feet will most likely never grow the hair back. They are calloused over, they are not open wounds anymore. I use carefresh bedding (very soft on her feet) and carpeted areas for her.

As far as Dancer is concerned, last night, my husband told me he didn’t know what I was talking about (yet again!). Dancer likes him much more than he likes me. Dancer sees me, he disappears underneath his box. Dancer sees my husband, he comes out and mooches. ??? Do I have to understand this?! Well, this morning A-HA! Dancer came out for me, too! HA! Velvet is back to her routine, she sees me in the morning, I open the pen and she gets to be outside for a few hours. Dancer is learning very fast from her. She gives him the confidence he so desperately needs. So I was sitting there this morning, petting both of them at the same time, their heads squished up together. So, so cute! Dancer learnt from her how to get out of the x pen, he walks around (hence his new name… he moonwalks!!!), where he is comfortable, he hops…

I am so happy to see them together that I cried this morning. They were meant for each other and I sleep much better at night knowing that they have each other.

No, they are miniture rexes. I suppose I could measure them? I am not too rabbit-experienced, so I don’t know how to describe them. They look much larger in the picture than what they are. Compared to the other bunnies at HRS, they are medium. When we were thinking about a leash for them (we didn’t get one), my friend, the HRS person, said that Velvet would be a small size. He is larger than she is. We are working on losing that doublechin of his. He was so fat when he got out of the shelter!

oh right, probably about the same sizy as my hopscotch, daxter is tiny so most buns are bigger than him hehe but they are very cute! i have been looking into getting a lead to but werent too sure if they really were ok for buns, i would like it if they were cuz it would make letting them have a dig in the garden much easier!
