  Hi There,
  I’m hoping someone has some advice to do with my baby rabbit, I have had him since Sunday, he is roughly 8.5 weeks old and he seems to be settling in very well and seems happy enough – he munches away on his hay but will not touch his pellets I keep throwing away his old ones and refilling it in the morning but it never seems like he has eaten any of them. Is this normal? Will he start eating them eventually? Help PLEASE!!

  Are you using the same brand and variety of pellets that he was eating before you got him? That’s assuming he was eating pellets before. Rabbits can be picky about food and can shun something if it’s different than they are used to. If you don’t know the brand he had before, you should call and ask, and ask about his prior eating habits too. If you are using the same brand, then I’m not sure why he would not want them now – unless you happened to get a bag that is not fresh or has something wrong with it. It is good that he is eating his hay, but young rabbits like him should also be eating pellets.
  
  Whenever a rabbit isn’t eating as he should be, there is a possibility that they have a problem with their teeth. Since he is so young and is eating hay, his teeth are probably okay. But it’s always a good idea to take a new bunny in for a vet checkup, so you may want to go ahead and schedule that.

  tobyluv made great points. Do you know what kind of pellets your bunny was eating before you got him? What are you feeding him now? And yes, dental issues could certainly be a problem as well, and it’s good to make a vet visit just to get a checkup in general.

  Is it necessarily important that he eats pellets? I remember a rescue member telling me that its okay to feed alfalfa hay if they refuse pellets because its essentially the same thing.

  Priscilla, they are meant to eat the pellets as well when they are young because it helps them gain weight and be healthier and stronger in general once they are fully grown.

  Wow, this is a little scary to know! I’m really glad that I didn’t end up taking much advice from that rescue member (thank god for this site lol)!
