yesterday i received an email from a member of rabbitrescue (a group thats in my area) telling me her newly discovered source to buy bales of timothy hay.  the farm is not far at all from me so i went right out & bought a bale for $5 – he said $4 but i rounded up since its so much cheaper than store bought hay.

he also had rhubarb for sale so i bought 2 fist fulls for $2 and then later proceeded to almost cut off the tip of my thumb while cutting it in to pieces.  oi.

so now i have a 36″x 20″ x20″ container full of hay!  yipee!  and both the girls are eating it up

What a great deal and they like it so it’s even better!

Hope your thumb heals soon. What are you making with the rhubarb?

That’s exactly what we did last year – bought a bale that size from a local farm for about the same price. It’s amazing how much cheaper it is!! We’re going to have to look for a good source for it when we move.

it’s unbelievably cheap!  i cut up all the rhubabrb & froze a bunch for maybe a pie later.  some i dirzzled honey over & left in the fridge to juice.  speaking of that… i should go & try it!  the rhubarb was mouthwateringly fresh (but oh so sour as it should be) when i was cutting it all up.  then after the whole thumb tragedy i just put everything away & sulked on the couch for a bit   i’m a big whimp when it comes to anything bloody.

that thing is huge! how long will it last with two buns? i just got the oxbow hay, which isn’t exactly cheap… but it SMELLS so GOOD! and Meadow devours it, which is rare b/c she’d hardly ever touch hay before. mark down when you got it BBM, i’m curious to find out how long it will go.

I’ve never tried rhubarb but I want too. Do you just eat it straight once it’s “juiced” in the honey. I’m sure since your’s is so fresh it would be much better than what I could get in the store. Mark Bittman had an interesting rhubarb recipe awhile ago too on his blog that looked interesting – going to see if I can find that one again.

I’m sure rhubarb and blood don’t mix well and I can understand why you just put it away and sulked. Is your thumb better now?

We have rhubarb growing wild in our yard. I don’t fancy it, so it’s really just a big weed to me. And with the dogs, I’m always worried one of them is going to dig it up and chew on it, so it scares me. Any idea how to kill it off? (I guess if -60 winter temps aren’t enough I don’t know what is!)

Congrats on the hay find! ^_^ That looks good enough for ME to eat!

I love Rhubarb, in fact I have a strawberry-rhubarb pie I made in the freezer that I’m going to be serving tonight. Also make some jam out of it that was pretty good too.

mmm strawberry rhubarb pie.  i think thats what i’ll save it for.

i’m also really curious how long it takes the girls to go through this amount of hay.   pinky has still managed to eat every ounce of hay i put out for her dispite my increasing the volume every day.  i used to put out a handful in the am & then before bed (what baby buns goes through)then i started giving pinky 2 handfuls each time, then 2 handfuls 3x/day, lately it’s probably been close to 3 -3x/day but i’ve stopped counting.  i just fill-er-up everytime i’m in her room.

yeah i’m not as clean as all that… lol.  the girls each have a big litter (24″ X 18″) with litter in a sep container for pee on one end.  the rest i lay hay in & is also for poops.  i also sweep out the rest of their enclosures into this part (hay they’ve trailed out & poops)so the rest of their cage is nice & clean.  but i really only dump this part out 2x per week.  the pee litter goes twice as often but i figure as long as its dry & contained then it’s ok.  plus i’m too lazy to dump it more often   lol

On the rhubarb topic – this is the link to recipe I used for the jam.

                                http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Rhubarb-Strawberry-Jam/Detail.aspx

It uses jello instead of pectin for the setting agent, and it’s super easy to make. You also don’t have to use strawberry jello, and in fact if you double the batch and use 2 packages of jello you can use 2 diferent flavours and get a nice mix. Strawberry-peach-rhubarb was very nice.
