I really think my husband is the best, he spent all night on foot patrol (police officer) then he gets home in pain from walking and then he spends 2 days making my condo.
The front pen at the moment is to keep the cats and dogs away; so far they have been really good with them
Merry Christmas everyone and have a Happy New Year.
Baby rabbits do not go into Neat Idea Cubes.
We nearly had a disaster; one of the babies got its head caught in between the wire.
My husband had to cut the wire to get it out, it looks ok just a bit shaken and is quiet.
I took them all out and put them back outside in the hutch.
Thank goodness we hadn’t gone to bed, the thought of what could have happened scares me.

Wow, that’s gorgeous. I’m glad the baby is okay – I didn’t realize their heads were tiny enough to get in between the wires – so glad you were there!
That is an awsome cage!!! What a great hubbie!!
THat is a fantastic cage!!!
that looks so great! what an awesome husband you have! (don’t you just love when they do sweet things for the buns?!) have you decided… will the buns stay inside from now on, or will you still use the outside hutch sometimes?
That is a beautiful set up! I am glad you were close by the rescue the baby. Babies cannot be housed in XPens or dog crates for the same reason. The wires are far enough apart that they can escape or get stuck.
I found out about the dog crates the hard way. A while back we were fostering 3 babies, and one of the boys started to show signs of sexual maturity, so we moved the other two out of their Marchioro cage into a dog crate. Five minutes after moving them, my wife says "Amelie is out in the house!" I say, come on, no way a rabbit can get out of a dog pen, its made to hold a dog for goodness sake. Well, sure enough, she was running around in the living room, I caught her and put her back, and watched. Within two minutes she was sqeezing between the bars to sneak out agan. She went back into the marchoro after that.
Osprey, I had the same thing happen with Netherland Dwarfs – those little buns can squeeze in and out of those dog pens and either wreak havoc or fall in love! I’ve had it happen with 2 netherland dwarfs. One got into another rabbits pen and lived happily ever after – another got into another rabbit’s pen and started bossing and fighting the poor bun (it took me awhile to figure the 2nd scenario out).
wow that looks awesome!
Oh Lisa your hubby so so sweet you lucky gal you! Wow that was a close call with the baby and thank you for sharing your story and thank goodness you were there to prevent a disaster. Happy Holidays!
Wait, so are you saying that their head got stuck within the grid or was there a gap betwee the grids? You said your husband will put another one over the top to reduce the gap. Not sure what you mean.
It looks fantastic by the way!! Maybe what you can do in the meantime, while they are growing, is get a thin netting type of wire that you can attach so they can’t poke their heads through.
Pictures below may explain a bit more.
Top picture on the right is the double panel that my husband did this morning. We ran out of panels on the top floor so I have blocked that off, I don’t want the babies to get up there.
Second picture shows the wire grid that the babies head got through and was stuck.
It got stuck in the middle and about 3 up from the bottom of the panel, not where one panel joins to the other.
My son noticed it was stuck and yelled for us to come see.
I was frantic; thank goodness my husband was calm enough to cut it free.

Ah your quick-thinking cop hubby to the rescue. Lisa, another thing like Binky Bunny suggested is some mesh cloth or even harware cloth (wire with small square holes would work too. It looks like what he did though solved the problem.
I am so glad your hubby was able to cut him free and he’s ok!
The cage looks amazing though, can’t wait until they’re a little bigger and can go back in there safely
What a sweet gem of a guy! Boy you better stop telling us all these neat things he does, we all might show up on your doorstep and fight for him! (Just kidding of course – about the fighting over him that is LOL)
Oh okay. Good to know! I will keep this in mind when recommending the cubes – How old are the babies?
4 weeks old last Sunday.
Oh yeah Scarlet Rose I won’t tell him either, his head may explode lol.
what i want to know is… does he have a single brother living in ontario perhaps?
what a sweet rabbitat!
LOL Lisa, his head probably would! Baybunsmum I call dibs if he does have a brother! LOL Maybe we can clone him?
