The other day we were at the health food store to buy some stuff to make soup, so I bought a bag of oat flakes (the kind that is NOT instant).  My bunnies absolutely love them.  I was really surprised at how quick they snarf them down.

I started off with a teaspoon and have worked them up to 2-3 teaspoons.  I have not given them daily but am considering replacing their nightime pellet ration with a small ration of oat flakes.  Does anyone feed oats daily?  I know the quantity should be limited- but what is it that needs to be limited- the protein? or starch?  I am just curious because they are so excited about the oats- they can smell them as soon as I open the container I keep them in.

Cotton is usually very picky with anything new- but she ate the oat flakes IMMEDIATELY and looked around for more.

It’s been a long time since I’ve given my buns oats but they do love them. I don’t know why because to me, uncooked oats taste like paper :~)

They are high in carbohydrates and calories which is why I believe they are fed only as a treat for healthy rabbits. They are supposed to be a good supplement for sick rabbits or underweight rabbits.

ya! I haven’t given my bun any oats but my friend does and she says that they should only be given as a treat every once in a while. I wouldn’t consider replacing their nightime pellet ration with a small ration of oat flakes.

I had no idea you could feed rabbits oak flakes.  That’s like quaker oats but not instant; right?   Is it just as a treat?  How much can you feed them?

yeah those big oats.  In order to eat them I have to throw them in a blender and mix with fruit after cooked. I can’t eat them otherwise.  Yes they do taste like cardboard.

Hmm I have never given my buns any.  Maybe I should try giving them  a few sometime

Jersey loves oats and I’ve given them from a young age. I only give a small pinch though as a treat. Think the carbs is the main issue. Oats I hear are good for clearing up sloppy droppings. Jersey doesn’t have issue with that but I do worry oat could cause constipation if too much. Like if it helps loose stools, what does it do to normal stools etc.

Anyway, she LOVES them and it’s better than an overly sugary treat in my opinion.

My bunnies adore them too. In winter when I made oats for breakfast Charlie would dance and hop around until I gave him a pinch. As soon as they hear the rustling of the bag they’re at my feet begging.
I give them a pinch every few days, cause my vet said they were too high carbs for an everyday thing. Also I don’t feed my bunnies pellets and the vet still recomended them only as a treat.

Thanks for the input guys!  I will make sure to use them as a treat only.  It is cute to see them practically inhale the flakes out of their bowls.
