I noticed maybe 6 months ago that my bun started having a darker bottom lip. Almost looks like a birth mark (see pic), it didn’t use to be there. At first I thought it was a poop stain and I tried wiping it off but then I just figured it was nothing maybe just old age as he’s over 6. However it’s stayed all these months. Anyone have any ideas why that would be? Should I be alarmed? He is happy and cheery as always, poops are great, purring, is active and free range. Any advice is appreciated 🌸

I meant to mention, I’ve noticed he’s been breathing a little louder at times for like 2 seconds and then he’s quiet again. I wonder if it’s the start of a bacterial infection? He recently went through a lot of stress (moving). I’m just wondering if I need to see a vet ASAP

An assessment from a exotic, rabbit-experienced vet is always a safe recommendation, especially if you have concern. The picture does not show much detail, so it is difficult to say whether it is a problem. Mouth-related issues could include wounds, syphilis, varying dental diseases… so there’s a lot of eliminate and a vet would be in the best position to examine and make those determinations.

Are there any impacts in how your rabbit has eaten over the months?

Thank you! The other symptom I have noticed is louder breathing at times, for like two seconds, and then back to being quiet breathing. But it will happen several times throughout the day. He is over 6, so it could be age, but like I mentioned his lip has become darker so I wonder if he is getting less oxygen right now. With all that said, he is energetic and happy as ever

Loss of lip color due to oxygen deprivation is very serious, and I would think that if that was the cause, your rabbit would be showing more severe signs of difficulty breathing. That being said, as mentioned, the picture does not show much detail so if there are concerns and worrying signs, I suggest seeking a vet’s opinion after an examination!

I agree with Wick, I can’t really see the picture well enough to know, but I think a vet visit would be a good idea.

I agree. I can’t really tell what I’m looking at.
