I’ve had my bunny for about 6months now, making her 1yrs old. I finally narrowed it down and got her to poop in a corner of her large cage. (she wont go in a litter box) but she poops where i put alittle pile of wood chips which is easy to clean up. But there is one problem, she poops and pee’s ALOT in that corner, like i change it daily or more and i still catch her laying down in a pile of her poop and her pee. like its gross me and my gf have to bath her like 4 times a week or shes just discusting.       What should i do?

First off, try a larger litter box. I use a cat size one, and my buns use it well. Lots of bunnies like laying int heir litter boxes, it’s quite common. You could try more absorbent litters, that could help with the icky fur. Also, don’t bathe your bunny often, it really isn’t good for them unless they literally cannot clean themselves due to health issues.

Does she get lots of out of cage exercise time? Having her out often may keep her from just lounging in the messy litter as much.

          Last thing.. is she spayed?

I agree about bathing, it’s not good to do too often. Is it pee or mushy poop you’re cleaning off her? Try giving her a “dry bath”. You can use cornstarch, rub it into her fur then brush out. It really does freshen them up.

It is kind of odd that she’s favouring that spot to lie in as rabbits like to be clean. Some do like to lie in litterbox but they’re also pretty good at cleaning themselves up. Maybe make her a bed out of some of the wood chip in another area? What does the rest of the cage floor have on it? Also, what wood chip are you using? Pine and cedar should be avoided.

Also, have you tried moving the litterbox to the corner she likes to use?

Thanks for the tips. Oh ya we have alittle bell collar we put on her and let her run all over the house. And no she’s not spayed. I heard it wasnt good to do so sometimes i just sit her in shallow water to get her underniether where she settles in the pee. cause its to bad to nto bath. I will try that dry bath though, sounds intresting and easier.  she has woods chips other then that area, and when i place a litter box in the pee/poop area she pees and poops right outside it… And we are using Spruce wood chips.

How is the spruce for absorbancy and odour control? Many people now use wood pellets (wood stove pellets accelerant free, or pelleted horse bedding). It is extremely cheap and really good for litter. You may want to try litter in only her preferred corner and keep the rest of the cage floor bare. Many rabbits just like to lie on the cool bare floor.

Spaying a rabbit will help in litter training & can help other behavious. But mostly it would also be very beneficial for her health.

The spruce works actually really grate for absorbing and its decent i would say for odour if there isnt too much pee anyway, if i change it every 2 days the smell aint to bad. But no matter how often i seem to change it she always finds time to lay in some of it. My dad and His GF own horses so i might just look into that, ty for the info on the horse bedding. I tried it only in that corner but she still lays right in the “little pile” i tried putting there so she couldn’t lay in it, then tried alot in the corner so she’d have room to lay beside it lol but she still lays right in it. I’m going to call the vet very soon and see about spaying her.

I use pee pads (the kind for dogs with no scent) for my bunny. I started placing them in a corner of his room to the other corner and now he’s using either corner. He would not use a litter box either. Also, I hate to say this but I read from the Bunny Guy that wood chips are very toxic to bunnies and you should not use them. If you cannot afford pee pads, paper towels could work if you slip a material pee pad down first or just use a rewashable pee pad. Buy a couple at Walmart and wash them out.
