I had wonderful brown Holland Lop named Penny. We had her for 5 years, but I never knew her actual age as I adopted her from an animal shelter with no background. I moved out of my parents house about 1 year ago and after a lengthy discussion my parents convinced me to leave her at home with them (house vs apartment & I work full time vs my dad is retired). My mom and I work for the same company and carpool to work so I still saw her 5-6 days a week. She was my dad’s best friend and clearly adored him and he took very good care of her. We are all shocked that she is gone. I guess I’m looking for some insight or comfort? I just felt like posting here might make me feel better…
When I got to my parents, they said they found her this morning. She did not have a cage, but there were several areas throughout the house that were “hers.” They said it looked like she was laying down the way she always did and it wasn’t until they bent down to pet her that they realized she was gone. I asked them if anything seemed out of the ordinary the last few days? I was just there on Sunday doing laundry and she was burrowing in my bath towels and socks! They said she was hiding under the couch (one of her favorite places) but she did not come out when it was time for dinner. Every night she got a fresh salad and went absolutely nuts with excitement as soon as the refrigerator door opened. To me that seems like she wasn’t feeling well, but my parents said they were able to coax her out from under the couch and she went and ate some Kale, but didn’t touch her cilantro which is a bit unusual. They said she drank a lot of water and pooped normally, no diarrhea, and she laid on her blanket at night like she always did. My dad said she was fine when he went to sleep around midnight, but by 6 AM she was gone…
She was an indoor bunny and slept inside, I’m in southern CA and our weather is warming up, but still mid to low 70s where we live and my parents are very knowledgeable about bunnies and heat. She does go outside almost daily, but my dad is always outside with her to supervise, and he had errands so she did not even go outside yesterday. I thought it might be possible she ate something bad outside? But if she didn’t go outside at all yesterday, maybe not. My dad thinks maybe a heart attack, but I’m not so sure since she is indoors at night.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? I’m so sad and confused and crying as I’m writing this…
