My bunny likes to make as much noise as he can with objects around the house and well, I’ve got to cut back on cardboard. What kinds of toys can a bunny play with that I can make myself?

My bunny is a noisemaker too, and I’ve been wondering the same thing.  Right now he only has a few store bought toys and I’ve been trying to figure out what I could make for him.

Do you do any crafts?  I knit and crochet and I’m thinking of making some stuff but I don’t know what materials would be best.  I was thinking jute?  I could make a ball with a bell in it or even a tunnel.

We’ve been making tunnels for him with cardboard boxes, but he has started just shredding those after running through them a few times.  He actually seems to make a concerted effort to jump on the top and flatten everything then he sets about digging and tearing.  I stopped at the grocery store last night and got a package of the flat bottomed paper lunch bags.  One of those keeps him occupied for a while.  He’ll never be accused of being incapable of punching his way out of a paper bag!

Another toy he enjoys is the cardboard center from the crochet cotton I use.  I’ve been saving them for years thinking they’d be great for something some day!  Now I’ve got a supply that should last at least half his lifetime.  The cardboard that they are made of is too hard for him to tear, all he can do is chew at them and run through them.

What a cute picture!  I like the idea of the paper bags.  I will try those too!   I may have to get a bigger size for Jack as he’s a pretty big bunny.  I’ll just start saving paper grocery bags and see if those spark their interest.

Thanks, we think he’s pretty cute too.  I have a series of pics from the start of the process to him emerging from the bottom of the bag.  After he’s done he likes to grab the end of the bag and toss it around a bit as he is doing in this picture.  It’s like he’s saying “There! take that!”

Do you think that jute twine would be suitable for a crocheted or knitted toy?  I’m not sure regular yarn would stand up to his teeth or that he wouldn’t end up ingesting some.  I want to make sure that what I use is safe for bunnies.

              Thanks!

What a cutie pie! : ) Oh yes I craft! I don’t knit but I do crochet, paint etc. I wouldn’t do jute or twine for a bunny safe destructo project. I would suggest using natural no dye raffia. : ) I bet that they’ll love that? Do a crochet afghan square to put on the bottom of the cage for destruction & traction.

I’ve done a few things here & there for toys. Take a mason jar ring, put a key ring on it with a big bell attached to it. : ) I’ve also seen people use old keys too but I am leery of the sharp points.

I went to the thrift store yesterday and got my bunny a set of plastic keys- a baby toy. The cost something like 50 cents. he loves them, and I was actaully woken up by him picking them up and throwing them down over and over again

i bought a hollow log tunnel meant for mice, it is about 5 inches long by 2 in diameter and has holes at irregular intervals, for the mice to climb through presumably. i stuff it full of dried grass/ hay and boy does Lollo have fun! he rolls it, pulls the hay through the holes, and even picks it up and throws it! it makes a great noise; the neighbour asked what all the banging was…..

I have to agree with the dollar store baby toys.  Pepper seems to like a rolling thindie with a ball in it that I got.  And besides if she hates it – its A DOLLAR!

Hi, I am new to your site and so far i am impressed! I have a 3yo Mini Rex named Carrera and a 1yo Dwarf named Pookie.

They both love their slinkies-plastic ones i picked up at the dollar store. I have also bought them baby rattles i found at Walmart for $1 just the other day. It had two small twisted handles easy for them to pick up with their teeth.

As silly as this sounds but my oldest bunny loves half filled water bottles. When she is out running around and we have one in the floor she goes darting by knocking it over expecting you to pick it up and sit it upright again so she can come by again and knock it over. Thats her favorite "game" she plays with my husband.

When i give them a new toy i take something out, that way they kinda forget about the old toys and then they are "new" again when i switch them back out again.

yeah for another mini rex!!!! I have one named Sophie who is my lovey dovey. We are all about homemade “baby” toys in this house since she is never interested in the store toys for bunnies, but loves her digging box and telephone book.

Wrapping Christmas presents, I discovered the empty long tube from the gift wrap. waaaay better than the little toilet paper tube. Soph has one of the ka-bob things hanging in her condo, but I put it on the side and not hanging from the top so she can make noise batting it around (think a pinata!).

Another big hit in this house is a medicine bottle with a marble in it, with the top closed. she doesn’t chew the plastic, but throws it around and runs after it. Also, tissue paper! Makes all kinda crinkle noise and Sophie runs around the living room with a piece in her mouth, flying over her head. All I can think is “Super Grover” from Sesame Street. So cute.

Welcome to BinkyBunny, Hedi!    I’m glad you like the site.  It’s very much interative and  pictures, videos, tips and information will continue to be added.

That’s a great advice about changing toys often.  I find my bunnies will get bored, and I need to step it up. I really should rotate three different play setups.  Right now I have one that I change around a bit, but as I observe them from the webcam, I find they are starting to look at it as like "same ‘ol, same ‘ol"

                              Again, welcome, thanks for sharing.

I rotate out Sophie’s toys. It’s hysterical. Take something that she’s bored with out of sight and out of mind for a few weeks, then reintroduce it, and it’s like Christmas morning!

As long as the rattle has something on it they can grab they will pick it up and throw or push it around. I found a great baby rattle at Meijers (not sure if those are all over). It had two small intertwined handles that were perfect to pick up with bunny teeth and grow.

Whenever I go shopping I always look in the baby section. Another great thing to try is those baby stackable cups in different colors. You stack them then the bun can knock them down and throw them around.

And detergent lids-they can pick them up and throw pretty well
