My Bunny is going on Vacation…I’m worried about her!

 So I am going on holiday to Thailand for two weeks! I am very excited but so worried about my bunny. 

She will also be going on vacation, to a friends house. I am sure the friend will take very very good care of her, and Chips is no trouble at all. But she has never been outside of the house before, apart from walking in my garden. 

Will she be stressed living in another persons house for a week?  

Is there anything I can do to make things easier for her?

She will be living in her own cage with all of her own things, but I am still SO SO worried about her!

 

Has anyone else moved their bun in with a friend whilst they have been on holiday? How was your bun?

I’ve never taken my buns to another home, but I’ve bunny sat many rabbits at my home and they usually do pretty well. I just treat them the same way I treat my rabbits. Obviously it helps that I do know rabbits and have rabbits.

I always ask the owners to bring something familiar like their litter box or toys for their bun.

My grandparents take my mother, my uncle and aunt, myself and my three cousins on vacation somewhere every year, so the rabbits in my family have frequently been sent to be bunny-sat somewhere other than our homes. My rabbit Humphrey has never been particularly stressed out by anything, and neither was his late bondmate Perry, and so I was only ever marginally nervous about them. They also lived with me through college and grad school, which meant that every year they got a new home, basically, and every summer lived with my mom and I– they were used to moving. However, my mom’s rabbit Monty is extremely easily stressed out and terrified of going anywhere in the car, so the first time we went on vacation with him we were very worried. However, he seemed to be reassured by Humphrey and Perry’s presence and has been totally fine every year we’ve gone– and I’m talking about a REALLY nervous bunny, here. So as long as you know he’ll be well cared for, isn’t too high strung, and has some reminders of home to keep him company, he’ll probably be fine.

If you’re really nervous and haven’t left yet, sleep with a baby-safe stuffed animal for a few nights before you leave, then give it to your bunny before he goes to your friend’s house. Then he’ll have something that smells like you while you’re gone. Anyway, have a good trip!

I am worried because this is the first time away from home for her, but she is a pretty relaxed bunny, and she is very brave (too brave sometimes!) so she should be ok.

The friend she is staying with only lives a ten minute drive away so I am not so worried about the car trip, I am sure she will be fine!

Any more advice on making the move easy is ok.

She will be fine. She may be a bit annoyed with you at first upon your return, but she will get over it. Make sure your friend feeds the same foods/quantities at approximately the same times she is used to. This will help to keep her on a regular schedule. If your friend will be giving her exercise time, make sure she understands that the space needs to be safe for the bunny (no cords, dangerous plants, or valuable possessions that can’t be chewed). Also make sure to provide your friend with the name/contact info for your rabbit vet and clear instructions on what needs vet attention.

So we went to Thailand, and are back now.
She was fine…of course!

When we got her home she was just super excited to see us and ran about her room checking her old favorite spots.
She licked me to death and then did her favorite thing.. sleeping behind the sofa !
