Dean, my Dutch dwarf bunny is usually out freely in my room whenever I’m home and besides the occasional pooping on the floor and hiding under my chair, he never gives me a problem.

Last night I got home really late, probably close to 2:30/3am – I felt bad that he was in his cage all day, so I decided to let him out for a while. Huge mistake on my part because I fell asleep.

I woke up around 9:20ish to find a small hole in my bean bag chair and a relatively small amount of the “beans” (little styrofoam balls) on the floor. From what it looks like, he couldn’t have had that many; I’m hoping he didn’t eat any and the only damage done is to the chair. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing for sure.

I feel absolutely horrible, and I’ve been trying to look up things to do online. So far I’ve been making sure that he’s drinking water and eating his hay and normal pellet food. I’ve also been monitoring his poo. He seems to be going in smaller amounts every 10 to 30 minutes, which seems pretty normal to me. I tried searching through it with a tooth pick and paper towel, but there’s no sign of anything unusual.

What do you think? Is he going to be okay? Is there anything else I should be doing? What should I be looking for and how can I help him? I feel so horrible, I just hope that he’s going to be okay; I love my baby bunny so much.

Bunnies will sometimes eat the strangest things and get out of it just fine. It’s good that he’s eating hay and drinking water and pooping. Keep monitoring him. If he stops eating and/or pooping, it’s time to contact a vet. You can’t make a bunny vomit and should not try to. I was worried at first that it were actual beans in the bean bag, styrofoam beads sound much less risky. Bunnies have strong stomach acid, so I doubt you’ll see much of the beads wether he ate any or not. My bunny Yohio has eaten half a plastic cat toy and a big chunk of a hot water bottle, among other things. They have a tendency to eat what they shouldn’t.

Thank you so much! I really hope you’re right and it’ll be fine. I’ll keep monitoring him just in case, but I’m so worried that I’ll need to take him to a vet. As a broke college student, I’m not sure if I could afford those kind of bills. My sister took her rabbit for an eye issue once and just the initial checkup was $80. Fingers crossed he won’t need it!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed too =) And sending vibes for the little guy.

There are some stuff you could keep on hand in case your bun gets tummy trouble, like gas, for some other reason in the future, like baby gas drops (simethicone). Zantac is also good to keep at home, it’s a human OTC med but also a bunny safe gut-motility drug. If you can nip a bout of tummy trouble in the bud, it might never come to the stage where a vet is needed. That said, a vet should always be contacted when a bun is sick, and it’s always a vet emergency if a bunny doesn’t eat and/or poop in 12-24 hours, (but I’d not wait more than like 8-12 max). But bouts of gas or slightly diminished size poop can be dealt with at home if you act swiftly.
