This morning I was lying on the floor with my bun out of his cage, he was in his favorite place, the litter box, and I was wiggling my nose, lowering my head, and blinking at him…he was looking really relaxed so I started to pet his head, face, ears and back. After that, he was making that chirping noise they make, which is really hard to describe unless you’ve heard it, but I figured that was good. I was happy, and rested my head on my arms and closed my eyes for a minute – and that’s when I heard it!   FLOP!  I looked up, and there he was all sprawled out like a dog lying in the sun. It was the cutest darn thing I had ever seen, like he didn’t have a care in the world!  I was so happy, I almost cried, given that I’ve only had him for exactly one week, he’s only 2 months old, and hadn’t really had any human contact to speak of before I brought him home. I think it has a lot to do with his breed, being a Flemish Giant, they are supposed to be relaxed and laid back, and I would have to say he fits the profile so far.

how cool!  it’s really great when they do the big flop where they actually throw themselves up and flop back down.  with a flemish giant i’m guessing it’s gonna rock the house… lol.

The first time my bunny flopped, she did so to take a nap. Standing normally one moment, then she hit the floor of her cage into the fetal position, eyes open but stock still. Scared the bejesus out of me. I ran to the cage and threw open the lid. She immediately sprung up and looked at me as if to say, “JESUS! Can’t a gal get some sleep?”

It would have scared me to death if I hadn’t had all the information from this site and others. Luckily, I read a lot about house bunny ownership before I dove in head first, so I had heard about the flopping and how it was an expression of the bunny’s contentment, so I was really pleased when he felt comfortable enough to do it.

The first time I saw one of our rabbits flop over I thought it was dead! He laid his head over and flopped his body over and all four feet went straight up into the air! It is the funnist thing I have ever seen. We have had many different breeds of dwarf rabbit and all of them do it. I read it means they feel safe. I guess we make all our bunnies feel verry safe! hahahaha.
