Hey Guys! I need your help. At first I thought I was going crazy but I just got Harry a month ago and he is the sweetest little cute baby boy bun. I really love him and we are also growing in him quite a lot. Anyways, when I take him out of his pen to play or I get inside his pen to play he will be fine for some time and then he will come running at me buzzing (yes buzzing) like a fly or a bee!
At the beginning I thought it was coincidence but now I can tell it’s him since we don’t have any bugs in the house and it happens when he is running at me.
It kind of freaks me out and I don’t know if I should take him to the vet. He was there a few weeks ago for a check up and work test and he was fine. He also looks happy and all when he does it. And he does not look sick or down. Anybody has this situation???
How did he learn it? Is he happy? Or upset? Or is a medical condition?
I find he is quite vocal compared to my other bunny. He will make kind of baby noises when I need to pick him up and he does not want to. Not a scream but kind of a complain.
        Thanks!

It sounds like hormones. If he’s around 3 months old his hormones are kicking in. Some bunnies hump, others buzz, others get territorial.. Every bun is different. Some bunnies are more vocal than others, even post neuter. Bombur is very vocal, especially with his meal time grunts. And Asriel hardly ever makes sounds.

If I remember correctly, buzzing is a hormonal sound? Wick never buzzed, but I believe it is normal for unfixed rabbits.

It’s good that you had your rabbit checked by a vet early on! A great first step and it’s good to build that rapport with a vet from the beginning.

I will highlight two things that stand our:
            1) Make sure the buzzing is an intentional sound and not the result of nasal blockage or something stuck in the lungs. Wick would sort of squeak when he had snuffles way back when. He was a very vocal rabbit, but then I realized it was because his nose was always stuffed. Now he’s silent, haha.
            2) You mention another rabbit, so would you plan to bond them? If so, I would recommend the safest route of keeping these two separate until both are fixed. Also it gives your baby some time to get used to you and the new environment. After some time, you can progress to prebonding and bonding. This site provides a basic guide for this in the BUNNY INFO section at the top bar.

I used to have a bun that buzzed like a bumblebee, it started before he was neutered but continued after it, so I looked a little bit more into it and from what I can tell it is a sound of contentment.

It can be a sound of contentment, some bunnies buzz in anticipation of treats. It can also be hormonal, buzzing is a sound buns can make when they are courting their chosen one. Other courtship sounds are honking and grunting.

Most sounds rabbits need to be interpreted in context. The most important thing is as Wick says, to make sure rhey’re “voluntary” vocalizations, not sounds that arise from impeded lung function/breathing. Small sobbing noises can for example be indicative of an airway infection.

My bunny Merlin would buzz before mating, before i had him neutered. Later, my fixed bunny Lancelot would run circles around my feet and buzz when i came into the room. It was excitement .

Elara does this only to my husband. I assume its’ her way of showing him affection. But I get kisses and he doesn’t.

Hello all, I out closer attention and yes it seems is rather contentment and yes he does it intentionally. Although not my favourite sound in happy to see him happy, healthy and playful. Thank you all for your comments

Wow! I had never heard of this! I had a bun for 9 years and thought that I knew bun stuff. My new bun is teaching me that no bun is the same!
I had to leave town for a family funeral & had a bunny sitter who didn’t remember to feed her pellets! When I came home she charged at me full speed ahead. I thought she had missed me, but the truth was that she was hungry! I wasn’t sure why she charged at me until one day I forgot to refill her pellets and had to work long hours. When I returned I was again charged. The only two times she charged me was when she didn’t have any pellets!
