I have been meaning to join a bunny forum for some time now. I have had my rabbit for over a year.
He is a mini rex and his name is Bunny. I hope to read lots of good tips and ideas from this place.
And it is always fun to share Bunny pictures. Here is the little guy now. He is very sleepy in this one.
How cute!
Welcome Crayon (I love your name). I am partial to Mini Rexes. ![]()
Welcome. What a cute cute bunny.
welcome here!!! i am also partial to mini rexes! lol!
he’s such a cute bunny! tell us about him, what does he like to do? besides lounge on fluffy pink pillows… ;o)
i really like your avatar, did you draw that yourself?!
man I wish I had a fluffy pink pillow! looks like a spoiled bun to me (:
Welcome to you and your adorable bun!
What a cutie! I love your avatar also!
SOOOOOO cute!!! I am as well very partial to mini rexes!!! They seem to have the best personalities!!!
OH my a Rex. Love his spots too. Cute rascal.
Welcome Crayon and Bunny! Your little guy looks like he has a loving home! Is that a pillow or a toy he’s snuggling?

wow, everyone seems to like the little rexies. I guess I lucked out with him. He was found at the end of my street hopping near a busier street munching on grass. So I caught him and took him home. He was a nice boy from the start. No one claimed him, I am guessing he was “released to the wild”. Lucky for him and me, I found him
I had been thinking about getting a bunny but it was more of a ‘someday’ kind of thing. Now it has been a year and I love him so much!
He cracks me up all the time. He is mad for treats. Goes crazy and tries to climb whoever the treat holder is. Loves granola, raisins, bananas, dried tropical fruits, and more. He does not like my sister very much. He pees on her whenever he gets the chance. :/
Otherwise he is good about going back to his cage for potty time.
He loves to dig in/on pillows and blankets too. If I have a throw blacket on when I hold him he will not stand for it. He will dig at it and bite it.
I found that out this winter haha. He also does not like wrinkles in the blankets. He will smooth them out by slinding his front paws forward till he is on his belly then jumps back up. Or he will press down with his arms and bounce a little to flatten them. Thats probably the funniest things he does.
Oh and that is no fluffy pink pillow, it is a fluffy pink teddy bear! He also like to run and hop up in the air and kick his feet to the side. It is kinda weird to describe.
Thanks for those who like my avatar. I drew it on the basic Paint program that came on my computer. I like to draw in general and other types of art.
Well thank you all for the friendly welcomes!
-Crayon
Oh no! You described it perfectly. That’s a Binky!!!
It’s generally considered as a sign that you have one very happy bunny on your hands!
Aww, you have a Binky-bunny! Awesome! He’s totally cute! Sounds like you are very happy together! Maybe not so much your sister… Oh, well!
I don’t even have a mini-Rex, and I love them! What a cutey…
I didn’t know that was what a binky was! Thats so funny. The first times I saw him doing it I thought he had flees that were causeing him to jump and twitch in suprise! Haha. But no flees, just happy Bunny.
Back when I baught Bunny a new cage, I had put it in the living room with a spare litter pan in it even though he lives in my bedroom.
So he was checking it out, hoping in and out then eventually took a nap in it. Suddenly, he jumped up, hopped out of the cage and onto my sister who was laying on the couch, and poo’d and peed on her blanket over her legs. I laughed so hard! He was right next to his litter box but made the effort to go hop onto her when he had to go. That naughty boy
She does not live with me anymore so Bunny can not torture her any longer. Hehe.
Hahaha!
Your poor sister!
LOL! ![]()
Welcome to BB, Crayon!
It sounds like Bunny has quite the personality! We love that here.
This board is definitely a great place to have any of your bunny questions answered. Everyone is very kind and helpful!
Yeah this does seem like a nice place! I have been reading some of the threads and I notice that the stuff my bunny does is a lot of normal bunny things. Like the Binky for instance. I just read the term ‘bunny flop’ and can guess that it is when the bunnies suddenly kick out their legs to the side and flop on to their side to lay down. I love it when Bunny does that. It cracks me up really.
thank you so much for rescuing him from the street! chances are good that he might not have lived very long out there by himself, so you did a great thing by taking him home!
i’m partial to mini rexes b/c i have one! my girl, Meadow is a mini rex… she’s in my avatar and in my signature pic next to Max, her husbun.
your bun does sound very, very “normal”. he seems to be quite happy in your care.
Haha, even though they are considered “normal” bunny behaviors, they never cease to make us laugh and adore them!
Beka, I love both your avatar and signature pics. So cute
I was wondering if you guys like to share videos of your bunnies?
If so, do you embed videos into posts, or post links.
I ask because I just took the cutest video of Bunny doing the binky thing!

I have videos! Lets see if I embed these right..
Hahaha! Aww Bunny! He’s gorgeous! Congratulations – you have a very happy bunny there.
OMG He is sooo kyooot!!! I just want to pet him, I can see he has super soft Rex fur!! You sure lucked out with him-what a cutey! And him with you-much better then living on the streets-no blankies to dig on and no sisters to wee on outside! LOL
Hey he even jumps sideways down the blanket. IN that last video was so funny. You have a trickster. ![]()
Bunny is adorable! *watches vids* hehe and a binky machine. Aha, *binkies binkies* toy drops…”WHUU??” lol ^_^ I remember when I first saw (Pudge) do a binky. I thought he was a PHYSCO bunny! Like really. Sudden bursts of energy out of no where, along with running into walls and objects … then looking up at me like “hey, what the heck just happened..?”
*reads posts* You drew that?! it’s awesome (and cute!!) It looks so much like Bunny.
We need to send that first vidoe to everyone who thinks that rabbits are boring and just sit there. He dances, he digs, he plays with toys – that’s one happy bunbun!
I am glad you guys liked my video! Bunny was just showing off some of his moves. He has a few more tricks up his sleeve.
Like high flying binkies and spastic running. I need one of those hoops on a stick so I can teach bunny to hop through it.
And yeah my avatar I drew on the computer with a mouse. I love how much it looks like him! I am not the best at computers so I am proud of my limited skills.
Well, I have decided that Bunny needs to go on a diet. Looking back at old photos he is looking chubbier. Actually I do not know how old he was when I got him, so I guess he could have just filled out. Either way, he eats way too many treats. And by treats I mean raisins, dried and fresh fruits, and Healthy Bits made from Kaytee brand. (Those are mainly oats and alfalpha meal with a bunch of other junk too)
Oh and baby carrots are kind of like treats too.
And I am going to cut down on pellets. I am hoping for a more fit Bunny for the future!
Does anyone have a suggestion for a helthier treat? He just loves his treats soooo much
Something with lower fat and sugar.
you can try herbs for treats. mint or rosemary are big hits. what i do is i keep a small container of their regular timothy pellets in the room and i use those as treats sometimes. a treat doesn’t have to be a special food, it can be anything that you feed the bun by hand. for raisins, i’d limit them to one or two per day tops. fruit should be limited to small amounts, no more than 3x a week. carrots are the same as fruit in terms of sugar. so no more than a tiny amount (like a couple matchsticks) 3x a week.
usually the most effective way to help them lose weight is by decreasing pellets. for a five-pound bunny, they do not need more than 1/4 cup pellets PER DAY. it is a very small amount. the bulk of the diet should be hay, followed by dark green, leafy veggies (2 cups a day).
I have tried using pellets as treats but he does not go for that. He just tosses it away. That would be perfect if he would actually take it. But I have not tried mint yet. Or rosemary. So I will se if he likes those.
He does not eat that many pellets a day but it is by his own choice. I offer about 3/4-1 cup every other day or so but I do it by handfulls so that is a guess. From now on I am going to measure out the amount everyday. He does eat plenty of timothey hay and gets leafy greens everyday. He is not terribly overweight or anything, just chubby from the snacking.
How chubby should a bunny be anyways? Is there a rule of thumb or do you just compare the weight to the standard?
There is a way to check weight and form. You should be able to see a slight indentation just after the rib cage. Be an idea to weigh him anyway, especially if you plan to put him on a diet. That way you can keep an eye on things.
Herbs are always good treats. Mine likes willow leaves, fresh or dried. Some, including mine, love to gnaw into a lettuce core. Even mixing up the varieties of hay can be a treat sometimes.
Don’t be discouraged if Bunny won’t eat the herbs the first time, though! Bunnies like to turn their noses up at new offerings the first couple of times…may take until the 3rd or 4th time you offer for Bunny to appreciate it. Oddly, if you sit on the floor with Bunny and pretend to eat the treats and REALLY like them, it may encourage him! (Thieving long-ears that they are…!)

Ack, my computer has been dumb for the past couple of days and I finally fixed it…which means I JUST got to see your videos! TOO CUTE!
hahah.. pretending the food is yummy so they want it! That is so funny. It’s like showing a dog how to roll over
I am definately going to weigh Bunny to see if he loses weight with his new diet.
I really have not varied hay types very much. When he was new I gave him alfalfa hay but after a few month I realized he had not grown any and was probably an adult now, so I started the timothy. First with Kaytee brand but then I switched to meijer brand. If you do not know what meijer is, it is a michigan based company that has super stores all over around the area and sells everything. Well, anyways I just got some Oxbow western timothy hay and it is quite different from meijers. It must be first cut and meijer is second cut. It is thicker, dryer, and pokey-er. So I don’t really know how to tell if one hay is better than the other?? Bunny seems indifferent. I will go get some orchard grass for variety. I almost baught it last time but didn’t.
In the spring for sure I am going to make an herb garden for Bunny! Thanks for the tips guys.
I am glad I joined this forum. It is nice to have support and people to help you to give your pets the best care.
I joined a goldfish forum a bit over a year ago and I have become quite the knowledgable goldfish keeper from them. I expect the same will be true with my bunny care.
You know, there is a ton of conflicting info out there about bunnies. I see that you folks here feed your bunnies dark lettuces but other sites say NO lettuce.. even romaine. And i still don’ know if I can feed him cabbage!?
Cabbage is know to cause bloat and gas, very uncomfortable for Bunny. Pity as it’s so cheap and easy to grow too. You know, they other day I learnt you can grow carrot tops just from the top of a carrot. So you could try that in your herb garden. Another healthy treat, high in vit A but you have to be careful with how much you give as with everything. Well besides water and hay!
I have given him small amounts of green cabbage occasionally and he never seem uncomfortable afterwards.. I will maybe buy a couple leaves that have fallen off the head at the store and rip it up into small peices and give it so him with his greens throughout the week. I guess I need to resist the temptation to buy it! It would be so convenient though as it stays fresh forever! Ah well. I have been reading another post on here about keeping greens fresh longer and got a few tips to try. But that is a major pain for me as I usually end up throwing out the last of his greens due to wilting.
I believe the general consensus on this site is that cabbages tend to cause gas in bunnies (sort of like humans!)… Check the Bunny Info diet tab…
There is a lot of conflicting info. Just make sure that you are checking sites that reference bunnies as house pets, not as breeding/showing animals. The two viewpoints are completely different…
I feel ya on the cabbage = gas thing.
I did check out the diet section here. That is partially why I believe I give Bunny too many treats.
To drive home my point about conflicting info on the web.. the link in the diet section from this site to a food list, has a few things that I just read on a bad food list on a different web page. I am not saying the other site is reputable or not. I don’t know. But that site specifically says to avoid lettuce. Even Romain. “Lettuce contains lactucarium, which can give your rabbit diarhea.” And it also says to avoid clover, and parsnips which on on the good food list from the diet section here. I have seen cabbage on other good lists in the past. That is why I fed it to Bunny. Ugh.
Anyways, it seems like there needs to be a ‘maybe’ list.
I also think that the treat thing depends on how active your bunny is. Yours seems pretty active, so it seems less likely that he’s over weight. Felony is a perpetual bunny meatloaf until around 11 pm, then he goes insane for an hour…
I have given Fel bok choy (which is a cabbage) mixed in with his parsley and dandelion and he really seems to enjoy it and he had no gas. I just guess that foods that can gas up a human can also gas up a bun. I’d say if he was fine with the bits of cabbage you gave him before, it should be okay to continue.
When I went to the store for greens they didn’t have any mint! They always have it but when I actually was going to buy some they were out
Oh well, I will get some next time. Anyways, Bunnys new diet is underway. He only gets 1/8 cup pellets a day and I have been giving him hay throughout the day so that he eats more than if it were there all the time. He still gets the same amount of greens everyday but no more or very little treats!! I do not have a scale so I have not weighed him yet! I might just have to take him to the vets to get him weighed.
Here is a pic of his fat belly! I want to give him a belly raspberry haha. Oh and his Carrot stained lips. Awww.

oh he’s so cute! his soft little belly remind me of Meadow’s…
alright guys, Bunny has been on his new diet for a coule months now. Not only has he been on less pellets and more greens but he has cut way down on treats like carrots, bananas, and raisins. And seed stick type treats have been eliminated (I did not know they were bad before). I have never weighed him this whole time but it apears he is more fit now. He is losing his belly fat that was accumulating. He is still nice and pudgy so don’t worry about him being too skinny! Ok so the funny thing is, he had this little fat roll on his belly before that I can’t seem to find any pictures of at the moment… But now that he is skinnier, it has turned more into extra skin and fur hanging down. Reminds me of a cat with a saggy gut flap of skin if ya know what I’m talking about. It’s like his furry jumpsuit is one size too big now.
Heres his new pics ![]()

And here is it all stretched out.

Sooo bright with the flash in the face!

Awww Bunny is my buddy.

Ok so besides the healthier diet I have also been exercising him a lot and the weather is nice so he gets to run in and out from the balcony all day. I have decided to train him to hop through hoops and stuff. He really seems to enjoy training time. I will post a video of it later.
So do you guys think his skin will shrink up some? Or is he forever gonna have a weird belly flap? A tummy tuck is out of the question.
I wouldn’t worry about his extra skin/fur. It may shrink up some. The important thing is that his diet is good. Have you been able to weigh him? What you can do is weigh yourself, and then weigh yourself holding him. And subtract the difference. It won’t be exact, but it will give you a general idea. Mini rexes can range from 3 to 4.5 pounds. (My Meadow is right in the middle at 3.75 pounds.)
He looks great and the added exercise is good not just for weight loss but moving things through his system too. He almost has a little flap under his chin too. Like a mini dewlap flap. It makes his lip look adorable!
OH gosh soooo cute!! I think Chuck may join the BB wieght loss soon since he’s now running around!! ![]()
He looks wonderfully sleek now!
He may keep that flap of extra skin, but as long as it doesn’t drag or get infected in the folds or something he’ll be fine.
We had a terribly overweight female at the local shelter for a while – they actually DID have to do a “dewlap” tuck on her once she got down to a healthy weight, as she was having trouble with food and water getting stuck in the folds under her chin.
What a handsome bunny!!!! Love those spots!
He sure is a happy binky bunny and I see that he also likes to dig! ![]()
Cute videos! Welcome to the forum too- I got my first bunny in July 08 and now I have two. I’ve learned SOOOOO much from this forum!
