when i first got Ivy she had a small cage and i got her a small letterbox that she had no problem pooping/peeing in, i got her a larger cage and new larger litter box, i put her old box outside of her cage and the new on inside infront of her hay rack. she wont pee or poo in the one in her cage, she only pees and poops in the one i put outside of her cage but its too small for her. how can i make her poop and pee in her cage in her actual letterbox? please help she hold in her pee and poo!!!!!

You’ll have to take away her old one because it seems to be confusing her why her litter box is suddenly outside and something else is in its spot. She won’t use the new one because to her, her bathroom is still the small one. She needs some time and you can keep redirecting her to her new one so she can understand better. I would keep her in her cage a couple extra hours each day so that she has more time to get used to it. You can put treats in it too so that she goes in there, sees her hay, and starts eating.

If she’s always been using the old one, then like Rain said having it there will only confuse her. Bunnies are very routine animals and when something in their environment changes, they get confused easily. Remove the old box and if she pees and poops outside of it, soak the pee up with a paper towel and toss that in the new box together with any stray poops.

Mine is the same way!!! He hates change so I can never EVER make sudden changes or he gets confused. I was in the same problem when I lived in a condo Pretty Boy lived in a small(ish) Cage with a X-pen attached and when we moved to a big house he got his own rabbit room, but he got so stressed and confused I had to get medication from my vet to help him cope with stress. I got him a big cat sized litter box but he peed all over the room and started ruining our walls. We had to go back to the smaller one. Now days, I use a bottom of my old cage as his litter box so now he is happy with his GIANT box So weird!!

My bunny pees in his litterbox, but won’t poop there. I put his poops in the box, but he doesn’t follow suit. He does most of his pooping when drinking water and eating kibble (he won’t eat the hay above his box).

@Houdini, it’s absolutely necessary that bunnies eat hay. They should be eating hay roughly the size of themselves each day. Unless you actually have hay elsewhere where the bunny eats it, I would suggest trying to put the hay in/on his litter box itself or somewhere on the ground. When my bunny had his hay in a hay rack he was uninterested in eating it, but once it was on the ground he would happily gobble it up

Also, what is commonly referred to as “kibbles” for dogs and cats are called “pellets” for rabbits – I got a little confused seeing the word “kibbles” used here, so just wanted to point that out

P/S: Sorry FLs I know this is sort of off-topic but since it was posted here…
