Most of you know I am going through a very difficult time right now.

My mom called me this afternoon from Nova Scotia and said Sandy, my 13 year old Shetland Sheepdog, had been rushed to the vet. They did tests and x-rays and she has a huge mass on her liver, pushing into her lungs and her stomach. They said since she is so old surgery was risky and she was going to be in pain.

I made the decision to euthanize her.

But I don’t know how much more grief I can take. I feel numb and in so much pain I can’t even breathe.

I have lost Nick and I have lost Sandy.

We got Sandy when she was 4 months old, I was 8.

My beautiful little girl, always so happy…I love you so much, I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to say goodbye.

        I love you baby girl.

She was always so happy. I love you Sandy…

She was a beautiful girl.  You’ve known her since you were a child, I vividly remember when my childhood dog died when I was in college (RIP Bucky).  My condolences.

I’m so sorry – it’s hard when you lose a furbaby that you’ve had all your life. She was just beautiful. I will light a candle for Sandy to help her cross the Rainbow Bridge where she will be whole again.

Oh Lion_Lop, I am so sorry for your loss! I have lost two very old and dear animal friends in the last year and it just seems like we never have enough time with them, doesn’t it? But be assured, your lovely pup is running free in fields of green and warm sunshine! She was indeed a beautiful creature and I empathize with you in your grief.
Here’s a big hug for you! (((((((((((((((((((((Lion_Lop)))))))))))))))))))))) Hang in there kiddo, you have friends here!

OMG – How awful for you!

but you were able to think beyond your own pain and give her the gift that she needed most.  That takes a lot of strenght and courage, even if you don’t feel like it now.

(I’m sorry I;ve not been on IM teh past few days but I’ve been off work with severe bronchitis.  Antibiotics are helping and I may be back tomorrow)

Oh I am so sorry. But just know she had a great life with you. It’s never easy. We had to put our golden down 13 years ago (wow time flies) and it was the hardest thing in the world. You did the right thing otherwise she would have been in a lot of pain. You saved her from that. Take care.

Lion-Lop…I am so very sorry for your loss. In March it will be a year since I lost my first and  dog Oz. I had to make that decision and out of all the time I had to make that choice in the past 2 years that was the one that almost did me in. He was pushing 20 and I credit him for saving my life, I was in such a deep depression when I found him. I can tell you, given the extent of her illness, you did the right thing, as as Wendy Z said so beautifully, you gave her the gift she needed, freedom from pain.

My Ozzy was a friend to every stray cat,dog or rabbit we ever brought home and I just know he is there ready to greet your beautiful Sandy. Stay strong, for yourself and your bunnies, they need their mama.

                              Lino-Lop,

How terrible – I am so very, very sorry.

I want to give you a link to the site of the Rainbow Bridge. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it, but some have made reference to it and it’s for those of us who have just lost a pet. Very lovely, compassionate people who have gone through similar circumstances with their pets. I found it very helpful last December when Spockie died. I have a little tribute to him there, and they have a ceremony online Monday nights that actually turned out to be comforting, helping with some closure. Making a decision like that is really hard, and many people there (as well as here) have just been through it too.

Let your counsellor know this just happened, in case there’s anything you can do where you are right now. Maybe have a friend come over for the night just so you won’t be alone so much.
