As you all can guess my little sister’s rabbit, Munch passed away and she just got the news from her “fiancee”. I don’t want to delve in to family drama so please don’t ask why I used the quotation marks and please don’t say anything about her care taking as you read; in any case I’m wondering if anyone may know what caused his sudden death and what I can tell my sister. Yesterday he was fine but this morning he was spazzing out and not eating (although my sister said her fiancee got Munch to eat while she was at work, least that’s what he said) then he suddenly stopped eating and through out the day her fiancee checked on him (Munch) and he was not moving and he was barely breathing then a little while ago I guess he stopped breathing altogether.

It’s difficult to tell precisely without a necropsy, but this has all the signs of bloat. Bloat is a condition where too much gas is present in the digestive system, all this gas in the rabbit’s belly puts pressure on the lungs, making it (too) difficult to breathe. Bloat has to be spotted very early, and it is a reason to call the vet ASAP because it becomes irreversible quickly. I’m sorry to say this, but the condition is very painful for the rabbit. I’m crying as I’m writing this, and my heart goes out to poor little Munch. You’re free of pain now little one, binky free

I’m very sorry about your sister’s bunny, Bunnylass. We often dont get to know the cause of death in rabbits. They hide signs of illness very well. When they show symptoms, it is most commonly in the form of inappetence and lethargy. Whatever this was, it seems to have been progressing rather rapidly, which in a case like this is a blessing of sorts.
