Being a white bunny, Buttercup often has a slight tint to the bottom of her feet. Nothing major. However, yesterday it seemed in a blink of an eye they became FILTHY! I’ve never seen them so dirty before. Even when she was really little and I used straw as a litter (that didn’t last long – not absorbant at all) and when she wasn’t litter trained, they weren’t this bad.

I started using a grated litter tray a few weeks ago, mainly because she started digging in the box bit also I thought it would be more hygienic. All I can assume is that’s it either from standing in the hay – Peanut pees on hay so maybe she’s getting her feet mucky before the wee has dripped through the gaps? Or it’s where she’s weeing on the poops and making the poops mushy which is then colouring her feet.

Is there a solution to this?

          Hi!

Both of your assumptions could be true. Have you watched her pee in the litter box and leave and see exactly what is causing her feet to be dirty? For me, I use pine pellet bedding(safe kind) and then a cookie cooling sheet covered with pine(have aspen wood in the mail coming) and it basically keeps even my white bunnies feet clean.

For the tint, is it brown or yellow? She could also be not eating her cecals and then she stands on them and gets dirty.

I would just clean her feet really well and then observe her for a while and see exactly what she is doing and hopefully the above can help you

I think my theory re: wet poops causing it is right. I used to use a thick layer of wood pellets but I decided to try and use less but I think I went too far and used too little! Because of not using enough pellets, when they absorbed as much as possible the extra wee just sat on top making the poops mushy which transferred on to Buttercup’s lovely white feet Don’t worry I’ve seen her eating her cecals

I’ve gone back to using more wood pellets now and hopefully things will improve. Just can’t believe how dirty they got

Yeah it could be poop or pee from the litter box, probably just cecals…

I hope so too! When I cleaned the litter trays, there was a big pile of poops that were saturated with wee. They were squashed and gross lol

As stated, it’s not cecals. Just regular poops getting smushed!

Oh geez… thats gross haha. I know my buns usually will poop and pee in one area so I always load it up with the pellets or else its a swimming pool in there haha
