So I’ve decided when I get home I’m going to move her cage into my spare room for her to sleep. I feel awful keeping her in her cage all night and I’m sure my neighbour is none too happy about it! If I can’t keep an eye on her, I know she has lots of running space and is safe.

I was hoping to keep her in my sitting room when I am home. So if I leave her litter tray where her cage was along with her water/food/hay she should get the idea, right?

Do any of you do this? Have a sleeping room for your bunny and let them out when you’re home? Do you have two litter trays? Any ideas on how to make this as smooth a transition as possible?

          2 litter trays are good

            Awesome, I thought as much.

So should I have like a little area in my sitting room for her stuff too?

As long as the door is open to her food area at all times, one food/water area should be enough. But generally, you should provide a litter tray for every room where she spends a lot of time – if she starts doing her business in one particular corner, just move the litter tray there.

How is her litter-training? Having access to multiple rooms too soon is not a good idea. Can you have her cage in the space where her main play area will be (like maybe the sitting room)?

Yeah, I think it was much too soon to move her. I wasn’t happy so I’ve moved her back to the sitting room today.

I’m considering giving her free roam of the sitting room. She is generally very well behaved except for chewing on the baskets, which is understandable.

I’ll see how we get on tonight with that, I’ll put away everything that could be dangerous and see how we get on.

I don’t have the moneys for an xpen just yet, but I will certainly be getting one when I get paid.

I would take free roaming very, very slowly. Build up to it gradually over the next couple months, especially if she is still young and has not been spayed yet. Young rabbits are very good for awhile, but once puberty comes on, it’s impossible to know when/if they are going to “take a turn for the worse”, so-to-speak. I would hate for you to wake up one morning and find that furniture, baseboards, drywall, carpeting, drapes, etc… have all been chewed.

I built-up to free (daytime) roam over the course of several months. It started out by allowing her access to the space in my presence, then I could leave the room, then I could take a shower, then I could go up to the corner store, then I could be gone a couple hours, etc. My pair does not have free roam overnight and they never will. I like them being confined at night for their safety, the safety of our stuff, and in case of a late-night emergency (fire, tornado, etc.) where we may have to round them up quickly. My buns have a large, penned-in space (4×8 feet). If the housing is adequate (an xpen for one bunny would be very good-sized space), free roam at night is not absolutely necessary.

Okay you make very good points here alright. She’ll just have to deal with being in her cage at night. The xpen, are they easy to put up and take down? I’d like to get one to use while I’m in work/asleep.
As it is, she is in the sitting room all day while I’m there. I’m happy to leave her in the sitting room to shower, but wouldn’t be happy to leave her more than a few mins.
I think I’m just being too soft and worrying about her not being happy in her cage.

This is why the xpens are so great. They can have an extended space without being fully free roaming. I can almost guarantee that she is very happy. It is obvious how much you love and care for her. You are doing a great job!

Coming from  an experienced bunny owner, that really means the world to me! Thanks so much! I’mma go find where I can get an xpen and try pick one up before the weekend.
