I’m moving to a two story townhouse and the bachelor pad is going upstairs in the spare bedroom (our office).  Coffeebean has had a mostly open door policy on his cage in our apartment.  I am planning on giving him full run of the house in the new place, too (assuming we can bunnyproof our bedroom – that might stay off limits due to lamps, etc.).  Right now he is locked up while we finish moving so he can aclimate to the new place (and not forget where that litter box is).

Should I be concerned about him getting hurt on the stairs?  The whole place is carpeted.  Also, he has had very good litterbox habits.  Should I anticipate any issues with his area being upstairs?

Every bunny is probably different. I have carpeted stairs going up to the bedrooms and a stone like set going down to the front door. Bumblebunny has never tried to go down, I don’t think he likes the smooth surface. He has gone up several of the carpeted stairs, but has never gone all the way. After three years, I don’t think he will ever go all the way up.

Buns are more likely to go UP stairs than DOWN stairs. Their forward vision is very bad and they don’t typically like steps. If his space is upstairs, he will probably STAY upstairs. Where do you most want him to spend his time? If you want him to interact with you on the main floor, I would make him a space down there.

My rabbit Bobby who is 1 1/2 pounds gets up and down the carpeted stairs of my townhome with no problem.

I also had a larger rabbit Pepe who had no problems going up and down although in the end he chose upstairs rather than downstairs.

I only have Bobby’s litter box upstairs with his food and stuff and that works fine for him. But you will need to gauge what works best for your rabbit.

Watching a rabbit go down the stairs is pretty funny. I had a good laugh from it. It looks like their bodies detach when they do. But yes.. rabbits are fine with stairs!

Mine look at the stairs leading down the the basement with very wary eyes. They have never made an attempt to go down. The dog’s ramp, on the other hand, is a completely different story. They use that to get on and off the couch, no problems.
