Well Layla has officially outgrown her NIC condo.  While I was in Iowa, I bought an awesome x-pen and she’s happy staying in that but I’d like to reconfigure her old NIC condo into a taller but smaller at the base one that will fit into her x-pen to add more area for her.  Her x-pen won’t fit around her old condo…(3 cubes tall x 3 cubes wide x 3 cubes deep…  you should see me try to clean that.  Ha.  I have to fit my whole body in her cage, with Layla standing outside the door saying “MOM!  That’s MY HOUSE!”

Anyway, any ideas on what to do to maximize the small space in my apartment?  I’m thinking a 4 cube tall condo would be better but I’m open to suggestions!

Go for height!! That’ll work best in a small area, you can go all the way to the ceiling if you need to!

Binkles has one that is 2 cubes by 2 cubes and I think 4 or 5 cubes tall.  It looked like it had lots of space for her bun to run up and down the layers to play and it’s probably fit well in the x-pen.

Mine sort of has an x-pen attached to it, it’s got NIC cubes formed into a pen as part of the lower condo area.  We use it for the two buns who are separated but they both love the whole area so it’d work for one bun with just a grid removed to open up the two area.   I have an open pen part that is 3 cubes by 2 cubes and then I have 2 cubes (or 3 in some areas) by 3 cubes of closed condo area.  The closed part goes up to 4 cubes high.

can you attach the xpen to the outer grids so she has kind of a yard?

Unfortunately I can’t detach any of the sides of the pen… it has a door that can open but if I detach any of the sides I’d destroy it. I’d like to build a condo I can put inside of it that still allows her a “yard” space”. Maybe one that takes up about half of the space and she still has outside room. Actually Tucker’s mama’s pen is probably perfect. It’s a great x-pen and I don’t want to do anything to make it not work for travelling and stuff. It’s perfect and it folds up tiny to fit in the car if needed.

so all the sides are connected and don’t come apart? that’ll make it a lot harder to clean too. can you undo one panel and ziptie it back together to make it into the pen? you’re going to need a way to get inside.

Well I can get inside by walking in there and I just take the vacuum in with me. I actually cleaned it up today and it was no big deal. I have it far enough away from the wall that I can stick the vacuum hose back behind to clean up any “stray doodies”. I don’t want to disconnect it (not even sure I could) cause it’s such a nice pen and folds up so nice and I don’t want to mess it up. There is a door that opens on one side (has a spring and a latch) and I can step right in there.

what if you had it where you kept the original condo, but then one shelf came out and it then deposited her into the xpen for add’l play space.

I’m having trouble picturing that. You mean so the door of the pen openned into the condo? Then I’d have a door on the condo she could come out of instead of the pen?

Ha thanks. The only documented area where women are not as compitent as men is spacial orientation and I am certainly afflicted with that a whole lack of that… ha.

the xpen would be completely separate from the condo so if you needed to move it or take it with you somewhere, it would be easy enough to get free.
