Hello all, we’re moving house this month and thought I’d ask you guys about things I may have forgotten when it comes to the rabbits and other pets. We’re moving local so we won’t be moving everything in one day, but the large furniture and pets will all be going on one day for the main move. Most likely in multiple trips rather than one big truck load.

What are your tips and tricks for moving, things that we need to remember that I may have overlooked? We have 2 rabbits, 2 cats and a parrot.

I’ve started formulating a bit of a plan, mainly for our parrot, Dory, as her cage does not fit through any doorway in our house, lol. We still have her old smaller cage so we’re going to shift her into that this weekend which gives us time to disassemble her big one.

List anything you think I may not have thought of 🙂

Oooh! Lucky that it’s not too long of a move!

I think the main thing is to keep everything you’ll need to set them up (at least temporarily) in one place, and plan to move the pets last if possible. We disassembled the buns main condos and put them on the moving truck, and had them in pens temporarily that we could take last ourselves (kind of the same idea as what you are planning for Dory). That way we could set them up right away and it was easier on the day of. I also kept the litter boxes a tiny bit dirty so they would smell familiar.

For the kitties, having an area to keep them locked up during the actual moving was helpful too to make sure they don’t get underfoot or escape. My cat is VERY good at doing exactly what you don’t want him to do, LOL.

Hi Azerane! Yes, Dana has a good point about moving everything (at least the big stuff) first… then move the pets in. That will help get them settled more quickly.

Yes moving the animals last is definitely what we’re going to do, I’m much more comfortable having them at our current place until all the chaos is over and then they can join us in a more calm setting. Jasiri is my main concern in terms of settling, she stresses easily.

Dirty litter boxes is a good idea though, keep that familiar smell.

Have you tried using Feliway for your kitties? I got the spray and it seems to help my cat Toby with new places. You can spray it in the carrier and the new house and it may help her.

You have also prob already heard the tip of having the carriers out and open all the time, so the kitties are used to them and they smell familiar?
