So I’ve had Esmeralda since September and she had a really bad moult over Christmas, it just went on FOREVER and it was all fluffy like normal (I’ve uploaded a picture on the yellow bed sheets) and came out in little tufts and was really soft. After a google I found that the heating can affect the moult so I adjusted to a lower setting and reduced the living room radiators where she mostly resides. Since then she barely lost any fur so I thought it had worked.

But now she is losing loads of hair but it comes out as long fine hairs (picture on leather stool). For example if I stroke her I get a hand full of these hairs but it isn’t fluffy it just stays as hair! I don’t know if this is normal? I googled and I can’t find any signs of broken skin or irritation and she isn’t itching at all. I don’t think there is an infestation and there’s no bald spots, I just mostly wondered if it was normal for the hair to come out this way and not as fluffy tufts? I haven’t had her so long so I’m obviously still learning!

Hopefully someone can enlighten me if this happens to your bun too, thanks!!

I’d say it is probably the guard hairs. Maybe it’s the last of her coat fur to moult?

Interesting that they are white. Does she have ticking through her coat or did these turn white before they shed?
I know sometimes with black rabbits, their coat can look brown, almost orange, right before the fur moults.

I agree, looks like guard hairs.

It just seemed weird that she stopped and started again. Last night she was on the sofa with me and she lost absolutely tonnes while I was stroking her! She was completely black when I got her then as it got colder she started getting white flecks but I read this might just be a winter thing. Do you think the white bits would be like winter guard hairs?

I was hoping it’s just her white bits coming out but last night they were grey like usual as well as white so she must be having yet another shed!!

She doesn’t seem unwell or anything so I’m not over worried, just choking on floating fur all day long

Some bunnies just shed constantly. One of mine seems to be losing fur 365 days a year. The other one has very distinct molts where everything just seems to fall off over a very short period of time.

My Elara is shedding the same way right now. All the rough outer hairs are coming off. She just finished shedding her soft under fur around her bum. I find a lot of molts are like that, they start and stop. Molting really makes no sense to me. Each bunny is different.
