Due to water damage in my apartment which the landlord has not fixed— there is a large colony of mosquitos which are accumulating in the living room right by Fujoe. Does anyone know if rabbits are able to get bitten by them, or if it’s really dangerous, or anything? I’m going to do some research on it and see if it’s safe or not, and call the vet tomorrow. I really can’t do anything about my apartment, I’m trying everything I can, like contacting the city and such. so, ya, please, any information would be wonderful. Thanks.

I’m so sorry, but I just couldn’t stop chuckling…. A Mosquito Colony is now invading your living room?

Now that takes the cake!  What luck you have!   Okay, so  I know it is not funny for you!  I mean who wants a bunch of annoying high pitched blood sucker bugs around. Where is the water accumulating that gives them access to lay eggs, but stay away from you?   Is there ANYWAY you can put bleach in that area?    That will at least take care of any future egg laying and hatching issues.

As far as mosquitoes biting rabbits go, I know here, in California, there has been a warning about myxomatosis which can be fatal to rabbits, and can be carried by any blood sucking insect like mosquitoes.   The warning extends to the West Coast of the United States.   http://www.rabbit.org/care/myxo.html

So, I am not sure what’s happening on your side of the country, you can check with your local Chicago House Rabbit Society and ask them what kind of risk there is?

I know in other countries, where it is more prevalent, they actually have a vaccine for it. (though it doesn’t guarantee prevention)  But as far as I know, right now, here in the U.S. it is not given.

This disease is less common in pet rabbits, but I am assuming that is because wild rabbits have much more exposure to insects.

Even if the mosquitoes aren’t carrying this virus, I can’t imagine being bit by a bunch of mosquitoes would be good.  I am not sure how rabbit skin reacts – meaning if it raises, causes an irritation which would cause excessive scratching, which then could cause an infection at the site.  SOOO,  I will ask a few other rabbit savvy experts.

For now, if for whatever reason, you can’t kill these mosquitoes, maybe get a thin net cover to put over Fujoe’s area.

Boy, is this one interesting.  Keep us updated on the the mosquito drama.

Hi in Scotland we have midges which are similar to mosquitos, there is usually warnings in areas with forrests to protect yourself if your hill walking etc as excessive bites can cause shock. Im not sure if this would be the same for rabbits. I do know that mosquitos HATE garlic and marmite (vegetable and yeast spready thing you either love it or you hate it) you guys might call it veggiemite. You could maybe rub a clove of garlic round fujoe or spread some marmite in his area but then again fujoe might eat it. I think it might only work if ingested but im not 100% sure on that.  Thats all I can think of . I hope you get it sorted because it sounds horrible!!

well, ya. I can’t believe my luck lately. The mosqitoes are gone now. We put up a lot of sticky paper and shined a lite on it. As of this morning there were still like two or three in the corner, but much better. We covered fujoe’s area, and he seems fine. I don’t think they bit him. I wanted to try the bleach, but I was afraid the smell might have been too strong. Thanks again for everything
