I’m so sorry, but I just couldn’t stop chuckling…. A Mosquito Colony is now invading your living room?
Now that takes the cake! What luck you have! Okay, so I know it is not funny for you! I mean who wants a bunch of annoying high pitched blood sucker bugs around. Where is the water accumulating that gives them access to lay eggs, but stay away from you? Is there ANYWAY you can put bleach in that area? That will at least take care of any future egg laying and hatching issues.
As far as mosquitoes biting rabbits go, I know here, in California, there has been a warning about myxomatosis which can be fatal to rabbits, and can be carried by any blood sucking insect like mosquitoes. The warning extends to the West Coast of the United States. http://www.rabbit.org/care/myxo.html
So, I am not sure what’s happening on your side of the country, you can check with your local Chicago House Rabbit Society and ask them what kind of risk there is?
I know in other countries, where it is more prevalent, they actually have a vaccine for it. (though it doesn’t guarantee prevention) But as far as I know, right now, here in the U.S. it is not given.
This disease is less common in pet rabbits, but I am assuming that is because wild rabbits have much more exposure to insects.
Even if the mosquitoes aren’t carrying this virus, I can’t imagine being bit by a bunch of mosquitoes would be good. I am not sure how rabbit skin reacts – meaning if it raises, causes an irritation which would cause excessive scratching, which then could cause an infection at the site. SOOO, I will ask a few other rabbit savvy experts.
For now, if for whatever reason, you can’t kill these mosquitoes, maybe get a thin net cover to put over Fujoe’s area.
Boy, is this one interesting. Keep us updated on the the mosquito drama.
