I found a domesticated pet rabbit wondering in our neighborhood. I was fearful of her being hit by a car or killed by a dog or coyote. So we took her in, in the hopes of finding her family.  She is very happy with free run of our fenced in backyard and very shaded patio and cool  deck.  She only pottys in the yard!  My issue is I am noticing mosquitos around her.  What is natural  like Lavender or Eucalyptus Essential oils that I can use?  How much and how often, diluted, with what?  We cannot have her in the house as we have a dog that is not accustomed to rabbits.  Hoping to find her owners.

Hi Tonya, thanks for looking out for this stray. I was trying to find you the info in the FAQ but the link keep sending me to Christmas time hazards! The only failsafe thing you could do is bring her indoors during high mossie time…but as you’ve said, that may not be possible. Is there a laundry room you could use temporarily? Are you in the States? I’m not aware of disease the mosquitoes may carry there…in Australia they carry myximotasis which is deadly to rabbits.

I will endevour to keep looking, but I’m not sure there is an actual repellant you can put on her as the are fastidious groomers. So anything applied usually will end up ingested. Lavander is a natural repellant, so a bush in a tub near where you keep her may help…

Vinegar is also a natural repellent.  Some suggest adding a few drops of apple cider vinegar to pet or human water to ward off fleas and/or mosquitos.  You can also use the apple cider vinegar like the castille in a bowl of water to catch bugs.

Vinegar is safe. Maybe wash down deck area with a vinegar solution? Even with some lavendar oil in it.  I think there may even be lavendar scented litters available, so a box of this nearby that she can potty in may double as a repellent.

Also, this site is pretty informative.  The product Crocodile! claims to be pet safe.  Has other options there too.

              vinegar really.. interesting…

Here in the states the only thing we have to worry about is west nile virus.  I am not sure if it is just in the southern areas or what tho.

I know florida and louisiana have that problem sometimes.
