More trouble a foot

Bindi troubles. Again.

A couple of months ago we dealt with his hock calluses becoming puffy and red. I put a fleece blanket to cover half of his cage and they went back pink again. I’ve been in a routine to check his feet every few days. Bad news: His right foot (left one was worse last time) has lost a lot of fur on it and a section double the size is red and puffy. I started applying a tea compress once a day as this seeemed to help before. I read an article by Dana Krempels and she said you shouldn’t apply any ointment unless the wound is open because it will just end up making the callus softer and that’s the worst thing you can do. I had been applying Bag Balm but I stopped after reading that.

I’m really not sure how this is possible. He lives in a big NIC condo, one level. Half is covered by a thick fleece blanket and the other half housed his diggy box and had lots of shredded paper in it. The paper made his feet black and the fur on his feet seems kind of yucky so I could only conclude the ink from the paper is causing his foot fur to get all weird. So we took away all the paper and put a second fleece. So he’s basically living in the most plush environment possible. The last few days doesn’t seem to be getting worse or better. I will get in contact with my vet on Monday if it’s the same. My bf won’t be happy…we just had Bindi at the vet last weekend.

Maybe he was allergic to something in the paper?
I hope the fleece treatment works. But yeah, Fiver’s feet usually take a bit of time to look better. My vet gave me this great cream to use on his heels called “Heal RX”….you might ask your vet if they carry it. It seals the callous without making it softer. Works beautifully!

Heal RX- I’ll have to ask my vet about that. Does it contain corticosteroid?

Bindi’s feet look even worse today. Looks like they are forming scabs on them. It just doesn’t make sense.

I left a message with my vet and bought him a big thick faux sheepskin to put even more padding in his house where he sleeps most of the day.

Too bad they don’t make slippers for rabbits! I’m not really even sure what more you could do to keep his feet from scabbing.

I suppose the ink could be drying out the fur (you know like urine scald) but I’m not sure. I know you want to keep their litter box very clean too (moisture free) if they have a propensity to these things but I’m pretty sure you do that. He doesn’t sit in his litter box does he? What type of litter are you using?

how about going to the dollar store and buying socks for babies? i used them on my dog when he sliced his pad 2 inches deep.

I use Yesterday’s News. I always change it every night (last few days 2x a day). He doesn’t hang out in his litter box.

Baby socks! That’s a good idea but I’d have to watch him the entire time they’re on cuz I doubt he’d be impressed. As a last resort it’s something I could try though.

Vet hasn’t called me back but I’ll try to get a hold of her tomorrow.

I read in my bunny health book about something called NewSkin which is like a liquid bandaid for humans I think. I’m going to ask my vet about it.

Still can’t get a hold of my vet.

I came up with the conclusion that perhaps the fleece is actually abrasive to his feet, despite how nice and plush it feels. I read this on a site today that any sort of carpet/towels, etc can be abrasive. Tonight I went to HomeDepot with the intention of buying the rubber floor that K&K uses (at least I’m pretty sure it’s the same stuff). But it is really soft rubber with grooves in it that I suspect he would chew plus it would cost me a lot and I’m not sure if it will help his feet or not. So I settled on some foam interlocking mats (discussed in the habitat forums). They are shock absorbing and have little grooves and nudges but we flipped them over to the smooth back so he won’t be as tempted to chew.

I’m concerned that he might chew these, despite all my efforts, but am sort of at a last resort here. I interlocked them as snug as can be so there’s not much groove for him to grab with his teeth the floor is longer than his condo so he can’t grab any of the ends. I left one of his smaller fleece throws.

I really hope to see some improvement (and hear from my vet) very soon.

The good news is that, as I type, he is out for run time and doing some insane binky/zoom combos so he’s obviously not tender there.
