Fievel, my Holland Lop, was diagnosed with an ear infection on June 28th. He’s on antibiotic ear drops twice a day until next Tueday. Yesterday, I noticed him making TONS of noises when I was putting his ear drops in. Ever since I got him, Fievel has been silent. Velvateen often makes noises when I am picking him up or whatever, but never Fievel. Today, he’s making them pretty much all the time… CRAP! Not the cute little grunts I thought they were… His nose is a little wet, but he also has a water dish and he likes to stick his face in there often so I’m not sure if it’s discharge or water. He’s still eating a lot- veggies, pellets, hay… Although he didn’t finish his veggies in one sitting today like he usually does, he ate about 2/3 of what I gave him.

It must be an upper respiratory infection of some sort.. but what I’m wondering is how did he get an infection if he’s on anitbiotics? I hate anitbiotics because they lower good bacteria and immune response and whatnot, but I thought that was AFTER a course of treatment, not during? Any thoughts? Bah!

        ETA: Lower respiratory infection? Gahhhh!

Well, just because they are on antibiotics does not mean it will cure everything – my suggestion is to get a culture to find out just what you are dealing with and what antibiotics will work for Fievel’s particular problem.

I think we need to remember that while a bunny is eating and that is great, it does not necessarily mean bunny feels 100% great. Even eating with a rabbit is a survival instinct. Remember rabbits eat to live and live to eat. I’ve had many rabbits who are not 100% feeling well but still continue to eat.

Vibes to Fievel and please consider a culture.

Went to the vet today and they couldn’t treat him. They don’t have the tests for pasturella and other infections so we were referred to another vet… Couldn’t get in to the regular rabbit vet (who is supposedly AWESOME), but I got in to the ER doctor. She came in and said she really couldn’t answer all of the questions I was asking… SO the regular rabbit vet is trying to free up some space so he can see Fievel today. We will go back around 2:30!
It’s crazy here because every vet will take in rabbits, but most know very little about them. My regular vet is 7 hours away so I can’t go there.
Fievel is doing so much better today. Last night he was doing horribly though.. woke me up a few times with his wheeziness. Now he only does it when he’s breathing really hard. I’m hoping it’s some allergies to the hay or something… I’ve noticed the quality of APD Timothy Gold isn’t that good? It’s mostly just shorter pieces and kinda dusty…It’s been a bad hay year all around, so I’m not surprised.
