More bunnies?!

Currently we have two rabbits a boy and a girl about a year old, and at some point we were hoping to get more bunnies but are unsure if this is alright to begin with (I know it is…technically hehe). We are really attatched to our two buns now and dont want to take away from their attention, and we still want them to be really bonded with us. At some point we would like a dog as well but that ties in kinda too. Is there a “best” way to do this for more buns/at some dog/cat? We just really dont want to take away from them…any advice?

Recently, a friend of ours who has a bun came over and our two bonded buns started to chase and fight each other viciously. Once he left, they were fine. We think that the smell of his unaltered bun on his clothes was enough to put our pair over the top. That was without even having the bunny in the house. That is something I really worry about b/c you can have the undesired effect of breaking up an existing bond and instead of having a pair and a single, you might have three singles. If I had a larger house where I could have completely separate zones for a couple different pairs, I would want to do that, but it’s not possible for us right now. Some pairs are alright with other singles or pairs nearby, even in the same room, but not all. Another thing I would not like, would be not being able to let my current pair have free run of the house. It’s not easy to bond bunnies into a large group of buns, so it’s likely you would be dealing with separated pairs permanently.

I’d be careful if your current two are a bonded pair. I brought Toby home as a short term foster *cough* yeah, right *cough*. Pringles and Daisy had been bonded for 6 months, but Pringles broke into the room Toby was staying in, took one look and dumped poor Daisy. So I wound up with 4 buns.

Four, because then Daisy was so despondent at being rejected that he wouldn’t eat so we met and brought home Lola from the North Texas Rabbit Sanctuary to bond with him.

I know some people have theirs bonded as a group and I would LLOOOOVVE to have that.

Well, I guess when I started fostering and getting more rabbits I never really thought of any bonds being broken (I had bonds form though) and none of my bonded pairs ever started having problems – I guess ignorance can be a good thing sometime.

Now, I don’t have any other species in my home other than a noisy cockatiel so I cannot speak to the species thing – I have though at times had hamsters, mice, and guinea pigs with my rabbits and obviously no problems there.

I have all my rabbits in one room too housed separately in xpens or Leith condo’s – have always done this and never had problems – even when I had unaltered rabbits with my altered which was going to happen. I’ve heard of there being problems though but never experienced this myself.

At the sanctuary I help at we have altered and unaltered together too and pairs, singles, trios – I don’t observe any problems there either.

Personally, I think Pringles was just a loose woman who hadn’t met her soulmate yet. She loved Daisy doting on her, but she’s totally devoted to Toby even though he doesn’t groom her. I have another word for her, but I think the bad-word filter would catch it 😉

Too funny Kralspace – Pringles is definitely an opinionated woman and she wants what she wants. It’s a good thing that she did find Toby even if it broke Daisy’s heart. I think Toby probably benefited from her loving too.

It’s true -it may upset the bond they have. But if your willing to work through that…OK I’m bad, I’m always encouraging others to increase the number of four-leggers in the household so my two cents is YES but that’s not an unbiased opinion!

I loved visiting the open house at the rabbit sanctuary Sunday. Here I was standing between 2 people who had 8 and 9 rabbits (Hi Sarita) so I didn’t feel bad for having 6 buns!
