        So after 6 days of Baytril, we ran out. >.< It was supposed to be a ten day regimen. Yesterday morning (7-20) I had to add water to get the last of it out of the vial, but added too much and Mimz couldn't possibly take it all from the syringe, so he got a dilute dose. I was afraid to try to give him any further from that vial as I feared I had mucked it all up.

        So I talked to Dr. B., who had emergencies all that day and didn’t get a call in to my regular vet until late last night for a refill. I was going to send the hubby in first thing this a.m., but Jenna was suddenly taken ill so I got her ready to go with us to be seen on standby. (She’s fine now, btw…just a mild infection, she is now on 1.5 amoxidrops for ten days also. Makes me VERY nervous to have amoxicillin in the house the same time I have to dose Mimzy. Luckily it is pink and Mimzy’s new script is white.)

        So we finally got the meds for Mimz  and in the oppressive heat we had today, had to get two bottles of perishable antibiotics home before they spoiled. Still, we were back so late it wasn’t till this evening I got a new dose into him. Wouldn’t you know, it is of course not flavored right. First the injectible which was bitter, now this suspension which is obviously tuna flavored if my nose is still working right.

        I saw something that worried me on his pen bars too…a sticky spot of blood. Probably from him grabbing the bars and rattling them for treats. It’s relatively fresh, probably from today, so I don’t know if his mouth has ever healed.   Hopefully not new damage to his teeth or jaws.

        What I’d really like to know though, is, this next course of the Baytril was only supposed to supplement the last four days of his original prescription. Now I have another 100 mg worth. The label says to administer it until gone or for the next 8 days (the nurse had to scratch out 14)…is that going to be too much Baytril for too long for his poor tummy? Did missing the almost day and a half of dosing possibly cause any germs to become resistant to this medication? I want to be sure any infection is cleared up, but I also don’t want to overdo him on the Baytril. Although I’ve heard of bunnies being on a 30 day course of it before.

        Just want to be sure this is going to work, otherwise it’s not worth putting him through another week of agony with syringes in his face full of stinky goo.

        I keep thinking of the movie, Yellow Submarine…where little Max, a toadie for the big bad guy in the film, tells the Chief Meanie; “Here Your Blueness…have some nasty medicine…” and shoves a spoonful of something terrible down the Chief Meanie’s throat.

        But I’m the one who feels like the meanie.

          aw, you’re not a meanie at all. You’re just doing what you have to do.

          Is there any way you can ask the vet all these questions? I don’t know how to answer!!

          ::hug::

            Sorry I’m not very knowledgable about the Baytril- although I can say that at one point, BunBun was on Baytril for 2 weeks, then SMZ for another 10-14 days and he was OK. That was for a UTI. I think that bacteria become resistant to antibiotics if they are given too often, not finished, or given regularly at an inadequate dose.
            I hate giving meds too- I used to almost cry every time I had to sode BunBun- I was giving sub Q fluids then too- felt like all I did was torture him. I wish we could explain to them that it’s for their own good.
            I’m so sorry poop Mimzy is having all these problems. As usual, you are being a wonderful bunny slave to him- he is unfortunate for being so delicate, but so, SO fortunate to have a mom like you . Hope everything starts improving quickly!

              I did ask the vet LPT, but I still wanted to see if there was anyone with this experience here. I’ve already noticed that the Baytril doesn’t seem to be working as well this round, he was sniffly again today. Maybe it’s because it’s combined with that heavy suspension syrup. I think I would’ve rather given him the injectible if it would work better.

              Thanks for the healing vibes though, both of you. I have to take my daughter in to her tooth extraction tomorrow (finally) so that will be another heavy stressful thing overwith for me this week. I might have a better outlook after that is done. Right now I’m in a funk because so many things are going awry.

                Poor Mimzy. Certainly not a bunny-friendly flavour. I’m sorry but I can’t remember, what is he taking the Baytril for? His mouth?

                ((((Mimzy)))))
