        Hi,

Recently my 10 month old doe has been really moody and has been growling and hiding. She had an encounter with our buck, so we assumed it was that. However, she hasn’t had babies and is still growling. Is there anything I can do?

If I remember from your past posts, your doe is not spayed, correct? She has been through a lot, considering the encounter with your buck and the thought that she might be pregnant.

Being around a male could be making her act out on her hormones more. Can she see/smell/touch your neutered male consistently? If she’s acting on hormones, getting her spayed would be helpful so she’s not being triggered by territorial/mating frustrations.

Also, I believe you had a vet look at her to rule out pregnancy, but any changes in health behaviors, like eating, pooping, peeing, or energy levels?

Wick makes a good point about hormones. Rabbits are induced ovulators, meaning they ovulate when they are mated, but even the presence of another buck can trigger ovulation. After ovulation the bun goes through a false pregnancy, if she isn’t pregnant for real, of course. That means her body “believes” there’s going to be babies and start prepping for that in the exact same way it would if there were real babies. There’s no limit to the number of false pregnancies a doe can have, meaning it’s not periodical like with dogs or cats or horses. It can happen at any time. This is why buns can have so many litters in a year.

Having her spayed will probably help lots with her mood swings. It will also greatly benefit her long term health.

The buck is in the bottom part of the hutch. However, she let me pick her up earlier. That’s a lot better than before. After that, I’m just going with false pregnancy. Definitely glad about that

Are you planning on spaying her anytime soon? This help alleviate her stress of constant false pregnancies and get rid of any overly aggressive or territorial behavior. Not to mention you lessen her risk of developing reproductive cancers.

I want to get my buck done first but I probably will in the future.

Why do you want to get him done first? If he’s not in as much hormonal distress as her it would be much better for her to go in first. It’s also more of a priority for her health to be spayed, as males do not really need to be neutered unless you plan to bond the two, then both need to be fixed. Just wondering

I want to get him done as soon as I can seeing as they’re quite big rabbits in small areas. It’s big enough for them and I get them out, but I’d like to bond them ASAP.

It may be better to spay her first rather than neuter him first. Since she’s going through a difficult time due to hormones and your buck is not, getting her spayed may be the better choice! If he’s neutered, she’ll probably still show the same frustrated behavior, but if she gets spayed, that will mellow out and your buck can be next in line to be neutered. Plus the post op phase for a spay is slightly longer, so it’s smart to get that done first. Neuters are much more straightforward.

I believe 0luciel00 said cost was an issue and a neuter is usually cheaper. It’s possible the doe is acting up because the buck is hormonal. Both need to happen at some point though.

If the intent is to bond them ASAP, then both will need to be altered relatively soon, as we all know bonding can be really long depending on the buns involved. That’s why I don’t understand the cost aspect. Because to bond them they both need to be fixed, which is why it would be better to get her spayed first as she seems to really be in distress. I understand the money aspect. Getting both of my boys neutered at the same time was about $800, and living on one paycheck that was not cheap.

Ahh I better get saving then. I’m not gonna be able to do it immediately, though.
