Hi! I’m not certain, but I believe my rabbit Pippin is molting. I’m a new bunny owner so a bit new to all of this. When do rabbits ushally molt their coats and what do their coats look like because I’m just concerned with all of her shedding. I also noticed a couple days ago she had white specks(flaking?) along her back fur. Is it normal for bunnies to flake when they molt? I was nervous about this flaking but thankfully today I noticed that the flaking had decreased by a lot. I was thinking the flaking could be mites but I don’t think so because Pippin looks like she’s molting? Thank you all!

The only way to completely rule out mites is to have a vet look under a scope, but some bunnies do get dry skin. My Bridge bun, Olivia, used to go through really bad molts. She would have bald patches all over and the bald skin would get really dry and flaky until the new fur grew in.

Some buns only molt twice a year. Others more than that. And there are different ways of shedding. Some lose chunks all lover and some get was is called “Molt Lines” like bunny pictured. Google pic, not my bunny.

My Elara is going through a big shed right now. Make sure to groom daily during a heavy shed to avoid fur ingestion.
