Hi, my rabbit Peri has recently had her dentals done and was prescribed some medication after. At the moment we feed both the medications at different times inside her critical care

I was wondering if i could mix both Loxicom and Zantac into the critical care for her to eat and would this be effective. I’ve heard in the past people recommend giving  certain medications at different times such as with antibiotics and probiotics, and was wondering if it was the same with these medications. I know that these medications are commonly prescribed for rabbits, so if anyone could share their experience with these, I would really appreciate the insight.

        Thank you for reading.

My thoughts on this is to give them separately, or mixing the zantac with the CCif need but giving the loxicom separate later. The zantac has 2 functions. It protects the lining of the gut but it also aids in gut motility. Loxicom (metacam) is normally advised to be given with or after food because it can irritate lining of the stomach and lead to ulcers. This is more of a risk for rabbits on long-term loxicom/metacam. The zantac you were given will protect against that anyway.

Im always worried they wouldn’t be getting the full dose if it mix with food. Especially if having to “force feed”. That’s just me though. If it’s a struggle to get any med in and mixing with food is the only way, then getting some in is better then none!

Is your rabbit liking the zantac okay? Is it the clear, liquid with strong peppermint flavour?
Is she eating CC on her own or do you have to syringe feed it? Is she eating some of her normal foods on her own?

She is quite good about finishing all her medicines, even her zantac which I also noticed had a really strong mouthwash smell. She even licks the bowl clean so I think she’s definitely getting most if not all the medicine. Originally we were feeding her with syringe but she kicks up such a fuss and in the past she has gotten so stressed from feeding antibiotics in this way that she stopped eating. So we figured this is probably the best way for her but for our boy bunny we would feed with syringe.

I think I’d give them separately too if given with food, but technically they can be given at the same time. That was how my Bam was prescribed them when he had a respiratory infection last year. The Zantac wasn’t popular with him but the Meloxicam seemed yummy. He accepted being syringe fed though.
