for the last 3 or 4 days pumpkin has been having some small poops mixed with her normal ones and im wondering if this could be diet related? shes acting completely normal otherwise and still pooping the same amount, it’s just the mixed sizes. she gets unlimited timothy hay, 1 leaf each of romaine and red leaf lettuce, and 1 tablespoon pellets daily. nothing in her diet has changed recently.

should i stop feeding her pellets and see if it helps? if so, should i do it gradually? could this be from her not having more of a variety of veggies? i was planning on introducing some new ones to her, but now that she’s getting these small poops i haven’t yet.

Is she molting right now? Lots of buns start having some weird poops during molting. Usually smaller ones mixed in means a bit of gastric slowing, so pushing extra hay and hydration should help pass the fur through.

she molted recently, but that stopped around 2 or 3 weeks ago. yesterday i noticed that after she woke up from her nap she went straight to the litterbox and all of her poop was small, but then just a little while later after she had been up and running around it was all bigger. could her gut be slowing down during the day while she’s sleeping?

Bunny poops are really closely linked to how much hay they are eating, so yes they could get smaller after she’s been sleeping for a while. My buns often have smaller poops in the afternoon after they’ve been snoozing all day. 🙂

I agree with Dana, a resting bun will produce fewer and smaller poop than an active bun, and a bun’s activity level various over the day. Buns normally rest during daytime and are active late in the evenings and in the mornings.

If she’s producing a normal amount of poop per day you dont need to do anything. If you feel you want to reduce amount of pellets, its safest to do it gradually, not go “cold turkey”.

You can also use use the daily pellet ratio as treats in a treat ball or snuffle mat or just scatter them around her area so she must search for them  – to mimick how a wild rabbit forages for its food every day. It encourages movement and slows down eating, two things that both are beneficial for the digestion.

thank you both for the help!!

her poop is mostly back to normal now. the other day i realized that she’s shedding some near her tail which is the one place that i dont brush much because she hates it lol so maybe thats what was going on. i’ve reduced her pellets a little bit and she started eating more hay so that seemed to help too 🙂
