Hi everyone, my Holland lop has been given a dose of revolution once a month for the past 3 months…Yesterday I noticed a lot of skin flakes around the back of his head and neck so I spoke to our rabbit knowledgeable vet and she has decided to do the treatment every two weeks.

he was “diagnosed” with mites but they weren’t able to see any on the slides when they pulled hair samples (which is apparently common). They also sent out a sample to test for a fungal infection which came out negative.

He is free roaming and I have consistently cleaned his room, washed his bedding and replaced his cardboard box house. When I give him the next dose, what else can I do to ensure I’m getting rid of anything that could have a mite egg on it? Do I throw away all of his toys? Do I freeze his unused hay and care fresh litter?  Do I treat his wooden hay rack/litter pan/manger with something like Diatomaceous earth and then vacuum it up?

I’m not sure how thorough I need to be but am starting to feel a bit nutty from this since it’s been three months of treatment and excessive cleaning on my end, yet they are still there.

any advice is welcome and thank you ahead of time!

It isn’t unusual for fur mites to not show up on skin scrapings, etc.

Revolution can be used to treat fur mites, but it isn’t always effective. So the problem may or may not be the environment. It sounds like you’ve cleaned pretty thoroughly… so you would think that would have been sufficient. If the Revolution isn’t working, perhaps it is time to try something else. Ivermectin was the preferred treatment for fur mites for a long time. The topical treatments are just more popular now because of convenience.
