So I’ve been wondering if anyone here uses a smaller-scaled shop vac for hay and stray poo cleanups. Smokey’s condo is pretty wide and I have to basically slide into it to reach her litterbox, and even further in if she has any stray poos around it. Also, she is a brat and digs through her hay in the hay rack to whatever hay SHE deems worthy to eat. So I’m constantly having hay all over her condo and floor.

Seeing as using a regular vacuum would clog it ( did it once, never doing it again! ), I was wondering if anyone here owned a mini shop vac or something that is similar to it, and where you purchased it from. I am DYING to find something to make cleaning up easier. I currently live in a cramped space and Smokey’s hay flingings make cleaning much more difficult than need be ; (

So I checked out Walmart.com and found this :

          http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shop-Vac-1-Gallon-Hang-Up-Wet-Dry-Vac/14179012?findingMethod=rr

Does anyone have this, or something similar?

*raises hand* I do, I do!

I got mine on sale at Lowes about a year ago. I like it a lot for cleaning her space, because the hose makes it much easier to move around, and the different attachments can get into the edges and smaller spaces. No attachment, just hose, gets up the poos easily for those that stray. It empties pretty easily as well, and has never clogged on me. I think mine is a blue version of the mini you’re picturing from Walmart. I checked Lowes’ site and don’t see mine on sale there now. I’d say go for it.

I just bought one yesterday! A little disappointed because any piece of hay longer than two inches stick in the tube and doesn’t go through. The filter is pushed up against the hose outlet so even if it goes through it collects there. I spent about an hour vacuuming and an hour cleaning it… I had to poke a long stick through it and shove the blocked hay. If I didn’t have that stick it would’ve been an absolute nightmare. So I ended up sweeping again…. And then used the shop vac which wasn’t what I wanted to do. I reccomend getting a larger model.. I know it sucks but ts worth it. Also the mini vac is the only one you can’t buy a hEPA filter for so the particles blow out the back a little. I bought an air purifier wih it for Franz lol.

Oh yeah.. Lol… It’s the Timothy hay that clogs it … The orchard hay is fine. I got it at Ace hardware for 31.99, they have student and ace rewards discounts at 10% also.

I actually have 2 shop vacs, one is HUGE, I believe its 50 gallons ….ohhhhh man does it work great!! I have the smallest one they make, it’s maybe 5 gallons? I just use the huge one but yes I love love love them, pick up hay no problem and all the poo’s no problem! My mom banned me from using her good vacuum because I was clogging it all the time. The smaller one’s tubing is much smaller though, probably would only work best for poo and not hay. Now the huge one….very good for hay and poo

SmokeyBunny, Thanks for the link! I’ve been looking for a shop vac too! My dad says he is gonna get me one when we move out. I don’t wanna clog the normal vac anymore

Yeah normal vacs aren’t industrial enough to handle bunny messes!

I just want to add that I pick up the hay by hand first, so that I really don’t vacuum up large pieces, just smaller ones and the dust it creates. Then again, after years of bunny life, I scoop up poos with my hands first as well. So ick, but much easier on the vac.

RP, I do that as well. Pick up by hand and then vacuum

Normal vacuums only make vacuums for pet hair. No one has invented one for bunny use I don’t have rabbit fur on the floor or on the furniture.

                          How is Miss Diva Smokey?

                            I have this one: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=CHV1408E&um=1&hl=en&biw=1152&bih=745&ie=UTF-8&cid=7563735910666407101&sa=X&ei=7z8uTYWSF4u8sQPXl-GTBw&ved=0CEoQ8gIwAA#

It sometimes has issues picking up longer pieces of hay, but those are the easiest to pick up by hand anyways. The hay does sometimes get stuck on the tube on the way into the vacuum but is very very easy to just shake out over the trash when you’re done. It all comes out with basically no effort.

I’ve had it since last August and it’s still perfectly working. It’s also cheap which is nice.

Great for vacuuming stray litter bits, poops, rabbit hair, hay and hay dust.

Oh yeah, the front ‘snout’ part of it also pulls out to reach trickier places.

Oh yes, I always have picked up Smokey’s poo by hand. Everyone finds it gross, and I have to explain it’s DRY so it’s not like anything is getting on my hand!

And yes, I would most certainly pick up the majority of hay by hand, it’s the teensy pieces that get in the carpet and whatnot I’m annoyed with. Plus, like I mentioned, her condo is very long width-wise, so I have to scooch myself IN her cage to get the stray poops on the bottom floor, which is a bit painful and difficult, especially with a curious bun like Smokey. Who is always WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I’M GOING TO JUMP ON YOUR BACK : D

Smokey is good. Acting as if I don’t feed her enough hay since I’ve decreased her pellets to 1/4 a cup a day. I HAVE noticed though since taking her off kale and pellets, that she has been MUCH more energetic and curious and like her normal self : D I know she can’t wait for spring when dandelions start growing again!

                                  Nom!

My bunny feels so-so about the dandelions. She is awfully picky!

She enjoys when I am asleep on the couch. She has crawled all over me, and even jumped near my head, and she was face to face with me! It was a fright!

She was speeding around the living room so much (Monday), she KNOCKED her lettuce off her plate, and I heard a SPLASH! Apparently, while running, her paw or foot got into her water dish, LOL!!!!!!!!!

I’ve heard of binkies into the wall, so I’m not surprised

Yes, bunnies will act like they are starving.. when in reality, they get all the hay that they want

When I go downstairs to feed bunny her breakfast pellets, it is like she knows! She comes out of her hut, and moves close to me and sometimes goes on her hindlegs

When Smokey hears me scooping her pellets she flips out and runs back and forth in her cage like a starved animal!

I have used for a while the pet vac.  Its actually an attachment that has a very long hose that attaches to your regular hand held vaccuum.  It’s marketed so your pet doesn’t get freaked out by the vacuum noise.  It works as a wet/dry and doesn’t clog up all that bad.  I stopped using it so much b/c I got a hoover hand held w/ my hoover upright that seems to do really well.  I would suggest a wet dry for anyone w/ more than a pair of rabbits.

Smokey is my only rabbit. So I should stick with the handheld one that was posted earlier? I need something because the hay dust from the hay mats is getting everywhere and I can’t get it out of the carpet or her condo carpet by hand ;(

Shop vac is not good at sucking dust in the carpet cause it doesn’t have a spinning brush. I’m picking up by hand, then sweeping, then shop vacing, then going over with a vacuum for dust. The air purifier is AMAZING.. I’m on like day 4 with it in there… No dust! It’s a little “cheap” one too; I got a floor model for $50… Totally worth it!
