Hello I am new to this site but I’ve seen it before. I feen my female adult mini Rex rabbit half a cup of sho premium feed a day. I feed the half of a cup in intervals, a little in the morning, a little in the afternoon, and at night. I was wondering if I am right in this. Is this too much? And she only eats her Timothy hay at night and sometimes in the morning. But sometimes she doesn’t fine she the pile I give her at night. Is it because she eats too much pellets? Thank you.

Welcome! Diet will depend on your rabbit’s age. Can you let us know how old she is (if you don’t know exacts, an estimate is fine), and also what the rest of her diet consists of?

Hi! Thank you! She’s not even a year old so maybe 5 to 8 months I’m not sure. Her diet only consists of feed pellets, Timothy hay, and one tiny treat everyday. Once a week I’ll give her around half a baby carrot, though.

She seems to be on the cusp of when one would typically transition to limited pellets and daily small portion of veggies.

Depending on her weight, her pellet amount will change. I believe the ratio is 1/4cup per 2lb. So Wick, who’s less than that, gets between 1/8cup to 1/4cup per day. If you’re unable to weigh your rabbit, still try your best to do so, or estimate based on the weight of cans or other objects around your house. You’ll want to eventually have an idea of weight through a vet.

For veggies, romaine lettuce is arguably the most safe, and 1cup per day is a good amount of veggies total for a small to medium rabbit. Reference the list in bunny info on the site for the safe vegetables. Even if a veggie is listed as safe, always to slow introductions. For example, parsley is safe, but it makes Wick pee like an elephant taking a shower, so I don’t give him it anymore, haha.

For feeding schedule, the most used approach is pellets in the am and veggies in the PM, or vice versa. This is because it leaves large chunks of the day where your rabbit can only eat hay, which should be 80-90% of her diet.

If she’s full and doesn’t finish pellets, that’s fine. She’s pretty grown now so the nutrients from pellets aren’t as essential to her growth, since she’s gone through the most rapid period already. Mainly, you want her eating as much hay as possible!

Timothy is great. Does she eat a lot?

Also, have you seen a rabbit experienced vet for an initial check up yet?

Thank you! I’ll have to get her weighed… I didn’t even realize they had to eat veggies everyday. So feed her the pellets once in the morning? And no more until the next morning? And im bringing her to the vet very soon! Do they need regular check ups? If so, how often? She barely eats hay in morning, only at night and not a whole lot but a decent amount.

An initial vet check up is recommended and then assuming there are no issues, a check up once or twice a year is good I take mine every 6 months.
