Mimzy and Fiver’s Checkup

Well the best I can say is: Fiver’s feet are okay according to the doc, and yes, she thinks I over treated him and he needs to get back to a more sensible diet. So I think he’s going to be a bit cranky for awhile. >.< His ears had a bit of wax at the bottom so she scooped it out and looked in them with the otoscope. There's no sign of anything untoward, so we're thinking it was just the wax buildup.

Mimzy received a new antibiotic that I have to blow by everyone here, it’s supposed to make their tummies upset so I got some more Probiotic and she told me to give him food with it. But since calcium tends to block the effectiveness of the antibiotic, I can’t feed him anything that carries a high calcium content….would banana baby food be okay for his stomach before a dose? It’s called Vibramycin, btw. Anyone here have experience with it?

Both got nail trims and Mimzy got one hind toenail cut too short. Took three styptic pencils to blot it off. (Silly bunny, if he’d have just held still, it wouldn’t have happened, but he’s become such a wiggle worm at the vet now.)

I am concerned about the stomach upset on this drug. We’ve got holiday weekend coming up and I don’t want something to go wrong and have nowhere to take him. (Not that I think they’d turn down an ER call, but I’m not sure my doc would be available.)

Worst part of the whole thing was the driving. I hate it when the hubby takes turns too quick and bumps too fast. Ugh!

Is the medicine in liquid or pill form for Mimzy?

It’s a liquid, Kat. 1 ml twice a day, just like the Baytril he had about a month ago.
I just wanted to make sure he had something coating his stomach, so I bought the Gerber banana baby food (my daughter did a double take when she pulled it out of the grocery bag and said, “I HOPE this is for the BUNNIES…” and gave me one of those looks…lolz!) Yah right…like it’d be for anyone else! xD
When I had to give his probiotic during his last round of meds, I’d hide it in a tiny slice of banana…but I don’t want to wind up overdoing the fruit this time so I’m not sure what I’d put the probiotic in now. 0_o

Anyway, I poked around Google to see what I could find, looks like it’s pretty standard as a treatment. It’s doxycycline, which I’ve had before (HATE it…gave me terrible acid if I didn’t put something else on my stomach first…not to mention it stunk of sulphur!) Luckily it’s a raspberry flavor isntead of apple like the Baytril was. He didn’t seem to like the apple much.
He sneezed a big old goober today, so I’m glad I have it. But I’m going to be sure not to hurt that tender bunny tum in the process of clearing up his nose.

Did I mention I don’t want his tummy hurting?? lmao….

Oh, and I came across this tender and touching story about a disabled bunny while looking for info on vibramycin…I was in tears by the end of it. It is sad and happy at the same time, what a dedicated family and determined rabbit! Very inspirational to those who have bunneis with chronic physical disorders or diseases. (Please bring tissues to this one.)

Not at all what Mimzy is going through, but a heartwarming story I thought I’d share a link to all the same. ^_^

I have no personal experience with doxycycline but understand it’s pretty standard as well.

Hopefully someone else on the forum has experience with this. I guess as with anything there is always possible side effects and it can be scary to give when you don’t know how your rabbit will react.

I’m not sure about the banana baby food – I would ask the vet for clarification though – I would think you would want to give pellets or greens instead of baby food so call the vet and ask her or the vet tech.

The baby food turned out to be a moot point anyway, he won’t touch it. >.<
So I’ve just got to get him to eat greens before he has his meds. He’ll only eat pellets at night.

So far, so good. He’s doing well and of course is soaking up the extra attention. ^_^ I don’t want to jinx the therapy (and it’s only been one day) but he seems to have less stuff coming out of his nose already when he sneezes.

I just read that story about Rascal you posted my goodness!! What a loving family!! Rascal had such severe health problems, I think I’d have to quit my job to look after a bun that disabled.

Glad Mimz is on more meds, pain in the bum but that’s good! Hopefully he feels better soon!

I know, K&K…I mean *gigglesnort* fergoshsakes, I’m 46 years old and very definitely past the change and, well, if I’m adopting anything it’s going to be another rabbit. I’ve had one of each kid and that’s DEFINITELY more than enough for me! xD

Normally it’s the husband who has to ask, “Is there something you’re not telling me?” >_<

Anyway, Mimzy is still doing pretty well with his eating before having meds. I alternate between green leaf lettuce and endive (I know, it’s pretty high in calcium, but not as much as carrots) and I think I might try to get him to nibble some sweet peppers this week…but I don’t want to throw off his diet and cooperation altogether, so whatever works right now is going to have to do.

Well he was a little feisty today. He is really enjoying the extra time with mummy, even if it means some nasty pink liquid is squeezed into his mouth (and usually I have to wipe up the chin afterwards…this stuff gets messy!)
Wouldn’t eat greens, so I got him to take a few barley biscuits, then a blueberry. (He’s started only taking one or two, instead or plowing the bag away from me for more.) I was a little concerned about that.

He also doesn’t seem to have really improved any more, which makes me wonder if perhaps he may have some physical abnormality that’s just now presenting itself and that’s why he often has such a goobery nose? Does anyone know if bunnies get deviated septums or stuff like that?
