So we were giving one of our bunnies (Fiver to be exact) a shallow bath today because he had a poopy butt, well he started squirting a whole bunch of this milky looking brown liquid stuff from his butt somewhere and it smelled horrible and made me want to gag. We haven’t seen him do this before.. so I was wondering if anyone knew about it, or what it was? He’s neutered and has been for about a year or so, so I don’t think it could be hormone/territorial spray, but I dunno what to think.

        Anyone? 😐

Well, it’s possible it could be bladder sludge.

Do you know why he has poopy butt?

Has it persisted? Sounds to me like what would happen if he had the runs in the tub.
If his poos aren’t back to normal by the morning, I’d call your vet and take him in.

Well we think it’s from feeding him too many carrots and sugary foods like so.. we just now cut back on feeding them too much because the vet told us too. But the other bunnies just have yucky slimey poop but nothing like what Fiver was squirting today. >.<

We only just now noticed it when we tried taking the poop off his butt today that was stuck to him, then he started squirting the stuff when we picked him up, and then later when my mom picked him up so I could trim his nails.

Was this very thick and pasty like?

Well carrots and sugary food have nothing to do with bladder sludge but it’s always good to limit the sugars.

I think just based on what you are saying that when you lift him he is peeing that he could possibly have a urinary tract infection. I would have a vet examine him.

No it’s not thick at all or pasty, just liquid.

I still think he may have a urinary tract infection and would have a vet look at him. Sometimes when they have these problems they will involuntarily pee because they cannot control themselves and the urine may have an odor.

Just out of curiosity, how dark is it when it first come out? I’ve been having these odd unexplainable instances with Little-Bit lately where she ocassionally leaves a few VERY tiny little dark dark brown completely liquid dots that are rather pungent. My vet thinks they are scent gland secretions because of the smell and the fact that they usually happen when she gets excited. It’s important to note however that all of her urine and poos are normal.

It’s like coffee with lots of cream.. a light milky brown.

Perhaps, so this would cause Fiver to squirt all over the ground and my mom’s shoe when she picked him up? XP ha. I will see if we can make it to the vet soon.

Well, the poop the other rabbits have are mostly solid but frequently mushy.. and sometimes smear on the concrete in the back porch making it harder to clean. We really don’t have the money to take them all to the vet, we just took our first bunny, Bun Bun, 2 days ago to get a splint on his foot that dislocated. Vets are terribly expensive.. but if Fiver keeps up squirting then we might have to take him. The other bunnies seem to be doing fine personality and active wise though.

They can get expensive when they need to see vet so close together. Especially when you have multiple rabbits. Will your vet allow payments over time to settle the bill? Some people get pet insurance thru VPI for their rabbits. There is also a system called Care Credit though I don’t know much about this.

It sounds almost like the bladder was expressed when she picked him up. Or he just let it go from stress of being picked up. With the smell, it would be best to get him checked for a tract infection for sure.

With your other rabbits hopefully you’ll see an improvement with less sugary foods as your vet suggested. Lots of hay and less rich foods should have their poop looking more normal. Good luck.

If you do take your bun to the vet, I recommend finding a little syringe (the kind vets give you to medicate cats and such) and sucking up some of the bunny sludge for the vet. He will most likely just tell you to go home and come back with a sample if you don’t. Also, to check weather that IS your bun’s urine you’re seeing, try putting hime in a small cage with no litter box for a bit (preferably one of the wire-bottom ones with the pan under). It may take a wile if he’s really well litter-trained, but he’ll have to pee eventually. If normal pee come after a couple hours, it’s not his tract, but if all you see is the brown stuff, well; vet time! Hope this helps .

Having had many rabbits with bladder sludge I have to say that the urine that is excreted is not always sludgy so you really cannot tell by the urine that you actually see. Most of the time with sludge I had to actually express my rabbits bladder to get the sludge out.

I do hope you will be able to get your bunny to the vet. If your bunny does have a problem with sludge and/or UTI, it should not be ignored, as waiting can cause major serious issues later. If you can catch things now and treat accordingly. IF it is blladder sludge then you will want to really keep on top of that. Better to know, spend some now, rather than waiting and possibly spending even more when it becomes an emergency.

Do you have a rabbit-savvy vet? That is very important.

You said that your other bunnies sometimes get messy bums. Maybe we can help figure that out as well. What does their daily diet consist of?

Also, all bunnies make “cecals” which are different than the round dry “fecals”. The cecals a wet, smelly cluster of poos that they normally re-digest. Most of the time, we don’t see the the cecals, but if a bunny produces too much due to a rich diet, or is overweight and can’t reach the cecals then sometimes a messy bum or seeing it smeared on the ground may happen. (There are other reasons this can happen, but those two reasons are common)
