(Okay, I swear I made this thread before the site went down. Ah, well)

Anyways. I just found out that yogurt treats are bad for bunnies. D= But I have a question, what about milk-based treats, but not yogurt? Are they bad as well? (Not going to feed either, but I was wondering how bad of a bunny mommy I’ve been.)

I read in my Rabbits for Dummies books that once rabbits mature past needing milk for survival as babies, they become lactose intolerant and do not produce the enzyme to break down lactose. So that would essentially rule out milk based treats. It would appear that it won’t necessarily kill them – but it could upset the whole digestion system which is, of course, dangerous. But you aren’t a bad bunny mommy – we can only do the best we can with what we know, and when we know better we do better!

I really feel it is more the fault of the manufacturers of these treats than it is the average consumer (although I do believe it is buyer beware).  That is one of the main reasons that I will not feed Kaytee Timothy to my bunny- I chose another brand.  I feel that Kaytee responded to market demand withh this pellet- but all of their other rabbit products (excluding hay) are basically junk food and either not healthy or even worse- not even appropriate to feed a bunny.  Why do they make these products then?  It is all about money.

Healthy treats are out there- we just have to wade through all the garbage to get to them.  I have at least 6 containers of treats that I have found are bunny appropriate- Oxbow Papaya tablets, Oxbow Critter berries, Oxbow Critter Carrots (carrot pellets that have sugar), dehydrated fruit that I made (Cotton likes blueberries), Orchard Sweets Apple treats (100% apple pellets) and some 100% timothy hay pellets that my husbands co-worker gave to him (her guinea pig would not eat them).  She only gets 2 treats that have fruit(sugar) per day and not at the same time- and I scatter the hay pellets and carrot pellets throughout her enclosure so she has to find them.

I also have some the the berry Smaks treats but I went and broke each heart into about 3 pieces and she only occasionally get a piece.

It is funny because the blueberries that I dehydrated in our dehydrator look alot like bunny poos.  Cotton was willing to try blueberries- but she would not try the strawberries.  Cotton is really, really picky….the only treat the she ate the first time offered was the Oxbow Papaya and Oxbow Critter Berries- which leads me to believe she can smell the natural sugar in them.  She is attracted to the smell of sweet stuff- but she will never try it.  She will sniff my glass of Mountain Dew- but will never try to lick it, she has sniffed fruit popsicles- but has never tried to lick one.  I guess I should be happy that my bunny does not beg and try to steal snacks when we are watching TV.  I have seen my husband offer her a piece of cracker and she is not interested at all- I think that is the only reason he offered her any.

OH those treats. I went thru the ohh what you call it….       the percentages of fats fiber etc. on  some of those treats.   I found one as high as 25% fat. Now thats a mega dose of fat.

For treats I use BB critterberries things and the vegie heart things.   I also use fruit my Cotton loves blueberries too but not strawberries.

Ahaaa the dried berry looked like a poop ahahaaa.  HEy would you like some blueberries (to the guest)  yes I would says guest.   Guest gaggs as bites into one.    Oooops the host thinks that was a bunny poop.  AHahaaa. OH my

                    Yeh you said it BT.
The best treats are raisins and craisins and papaya tablets, they go crazy for them and they’re natural!

Do Craisin and Raisins have something added to them?  Or are they 100% cranberries or grapes?

Craisins and most raisins have a sprinkling of sugar on them. I prefer either fresh fruit, or the organic, no sugar added dried ones as treats.

Oh yes, actually you have to read the ingredients on the bag, I’ve seen types of raisins with oil as an ingredient. Just read and ensure it’s just the fruit!!

It’s a carrot treat, kinda crunchy. It has a filling, which is what is milk-based. ='( I work at a pet store, and my bunnies loved them, so I gave it to them as a treats.

Actually, just ordered some of those papaya tablets. Let’s hope the buns like them. =)

Oh they will go crazy for them! Like most new treats some are uncertain of them at first and its disappointing but just offer them a couple times and then they’ll be hooked! The good thing about them is they are made with timothy hay too so they are pretty healthy!
