We took Bonton to the vet last Tuesday after he presented continued sneezing for a couple days and white discharge I noticed once. His wellness exam was perfect, blood work was perfect, they did a X-ray that showed a mild case of pneumonia or infection of the lungs. He’s on an antibiotic for 30 days and an anti inflammatory for 14 days.  Sneezing has reduced greatly and no more discharge either. Wondering if his long term prognosis is good? They said we caught it early enough for it not to present an issue.

It depends on the cause of the infection (type of bacteria, whether it’s related to another underlying condition, etc.). Respiratory infections can certainly make their way down into the lungs. If caught early and treated right away, then the prognosis is usually good. If the pneumonia is bad and it has a stronghold in the lungs, then it can become very difficult to treat. Treatment may last a long time (longer than 30 days) and the prognosis isn’t as good because festering pneumonia can lead to other problems caused by the bacteria spreading to other parts of body.

This is a good article, but I don’t want it to scare you: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Respiratory/Illness/Pneumonia/Pneumon_en.htm

If he is responding well to the antibiotic treatment, then that is promising. It sounds like this was caught early.  🙂

            Hi!

I just want to add that I had a bunny who had a mild case of pneumonia, and he made a full recovery. He was around 7-8 years old, so not a youngster. The suspected cause was aspiration (from choking on pellets), but we cant know for certain, of course.

My bun was treated with Bactrim for 2 weeks, plus Metacam (anti inflammatory) and terbutaline for 5 days.

He’s on Trimethoprim and Metacam. Appetite is still great, pooping normal, running and exploring like usual, begging for treats. Just staying the course right now. No thick discharge, just the occasional sneeze, which could also be from fur and shedding.
