This is something my parents always went on about, but I don’t know if it’s true that bunnies attract mice. We only have voles where I am, and the cat keeps them down. I don’t think it is the bunnies that are the mice magnet as much as it is their food.
Any opinions or facts from the other members? I’m kind of lost here.

i’ve never heard of buns attracting mice, so i have no idea. it is frustrating tho. in our old house, we had a couple mice (well, one mouse, one turned out to be a hamster that shimmied down the wall from the upstairs apartment) and i don’t like mice that are not domesticated… weird i know. i have no problem with pet mice, even had some myself… but when they are just running in your home. it kinda creeps me out.

I actually think pets tend to keep other animals away– my mom and I never had mice or any other pests until my chinchilla died a few years back– and we went a year+ petless, and that’s when the mice came. They won’t go away now, though, even with the bunnies and other chilla. But I don’t think bunnies attract mice. Mice are scared of things that are bigger than them!

when I was a little girl   we had buns outside in nice gated pen fully enclosed and the cages were in there. was attached to out big wooden shed my dad built. was rural area.     then came the iccky mice. they  would be in the shed tryign to get to the rabbit food. among other things.   I caught a mouse in my bare hand in the rabbit food. back when I was brave lol…. and since the food was in garbage cans with a lid I must have left the lid off while feeding them      yeah kids you know and it got in there and I caught it it squirmed away tho. dad put out some poison for them and that got rid of them. he put it in the shed so the other outside animals had less of a chance of eating it. I wish I had a pic of their pen and enclosure he did a real good job building it. dad liked doing tha sort of thing.  he had sand trucked in to fill the bottom of the enclosure with about 1 ft high and he dug into the ground as well to put posts and the wire in the ground to help keep pests out. with the sand a foot high inside they would have had a time digging to get in. and I never saw any digging holes from dogs or coons and such so was real good set up. they had a nice roof and a nice gate. I will have to ask my mom for pics of that if she can find them. the only pics I have are of my fist rabbit in a hutch no protection dad built that too and then he got bzy with the enclosure. oh I got pics of my 2 nzwhites winning buck 1st place doe 2nd place in our first 4H show. this subject of mice brought back memories.

mice come but not cuz the buns. not directly. we have had mice with only 2 dogs too and was nasty. I hate them   and I would not catch even a tame one in my hand nowadays. gee people and things sure change huh? I used to have no fear would mess with the snakes get them in strike pose and take pics lol. scare people with them too.

jpgood…do you or anyone near you smoke? For some reason, mice are VERY attracted to tobacco, in fact if you want to bait them use ciggarette butts not cheese….
If this is the case, ensure butts are being cleaned up, that should help

Make sure that you keep all the bun stuff cleaned up (poops, food, hay, etc.) If it is on the floor, that will attract them.

I totally agree, it isn’t necessarily the rabbit, it’s the food & bedding that attracts them.

                          Hey y’all
In another post jpgood said that Termnex is coming on Wednesday – I hope that helps. Make sure you tell them you have a bunny!

It is not so much the mice that bother me – It’s the scratching and gnawing in the walls that keeps you awake all night! In our old house we even tried those sonic sound things – but those kept us awake too.

YES! Do make sure they know about the bunny. Buns have a much more delicate respiratory system than other animals and need to follow more special guidelines. I kept my lil’ nipper boarded for 3 days after they visited and also washed down any flat surfaces – but this was for bugs. For mice, they’ll probably use bait poison and you WILL want to know where they put it. I had mine make sure they put it up high and/or only in cupboards that I knew that my buns would never get to (such as under the sink).

Mice are pretty much impossible to get rid of without fumigating. Once they come, they don’t leave. However, if you Tupperware-encase your food/clothes/etc, they tend to back out of the house proper and just scuttle around in the walls, which isn’t really that bad. My mom and I had to reorganize our entire kitchen because mice kept eating our cereal (and chopsticks… o__O), but once we put everything in Tupperware and/or where mice couldn’t reach it (on top of something tall and smooth they can’t climb) they left the kitchen. Of course, then they decided that our shoes and clothes were almost as delicious, so they moved into our closets… but I just bought big Rubbermade contains for all my clothes/loose stuffed animals, and they’re just about gone now. They’re actually not interested in the room with the bunnies/chilla at all. So now we only ever hear the mice if they run across the ceiling, and we never find evidence of them anymore unless we put out ant traps, which they think are delicious and steal. (Squirrels will steal the outside ones, too, it’s really hysterical) But they’re not really such a big deal unless they’re getting into your personal belongings. I personally am very fond of mice and other small rodenty things, so I wouldn’t dream of trying to trap them (because the humane traps sure as heck don’t work, and neither do those sonic repellers, and neither do moth balls) or fumigate them, but if you just make an effort to keep edible things out of their way they tend to leave you alone.

my guess is it’s the more the food that attracts them and not your bunnies.

make sure to tell Terminex that you have the bunny – in fact I would be inclined to remove the bunny to someone else’s house for *at least* 24 hours. I have no idea what’s in those potent chemicals they’re using. I would ask about it for sure.

                                  A little update

Mouse Count = 7  Terminix  did come but the ” pest ” guy  didn’t come  only the termite guy.   They asked if we had children or animals and  my husband did say  we have a rabbit.  I am hoping  that the pest guy understands that.  Also  if we have to put shadow somewhere I think we wil ljust bring her to my school (where she once was ) for a couple days.  The students will love seeing her back for a VISIT!  I don’t think my parents want her  ( they have 2 cats )  and I can’t think of anyone else that would take  our bunny lovingly  ( poor lil shadow)

I thought that rabbits were of the rodent family?  If they are rodents do not like to go into other AKA bigger rodents’ domains.  I agree that pet food will attract mice, but the poop might keep them away…at least from the bunny area.  I worked in the Philly School District for many years and we always had mice….always!  We also have lots of mice outside.  My neighbor blames it on our garbage cans but I really blame his overgrown backyard!

OOC..can you hear mice climbing through the walls.  We hear something, but we think it’s squirrels.  We’ve gotten the occasional mouse on our 2nd/ 3rd floor apt.  Phoebe Cat found them every time.  I had to rescue the mice from Phoebe, which was selfish on my part b/c I just didn’t want to get the mouse carcas as a “present” on the bed in the morning from Phoebs.

Well Terminex blew us off AGAIN. Came earlier than I had requested (twice).
Should we take up her corner potty when she isn’t out. We have tuperwared her hay and pellets. What about her “yesturday’s news”?

I don’t, Not to sure about my wife, but I think shadow does (I see her peak her head up at times). My wife says “buns and cats’ are natural enemies,” yes/no.

now coming in sat. Now was told CANNOT request any time (like I was told 2 times) 2hr window only. So it doesn’t matter if your working; or whatever your doing untill a certain time your up s creek if your not around.

I just called and confired no problems, we have a bun. CSR said “No” just tell the tech also. Said the hay maybe the cause. Not to sure. It doesn’t make sence to me because it’s only been recent we’ve seen them. I don’t have a problem if they are there (in home) I don’t want to see them, that gets us wierded out, and shadow too.

                                            We’ll see how it goes.

I think that I got confused b/c rodents are “gnawing animals”….apparently I’m not the only one to get confused by that so thanks for correcting me….at least that’s what I tell myself to make me feel less dumb

I was always told that I could never “have  a pet rabbit” due to having cats (that came from my ex).  However, I generally do not have any problems w/ the 4 cats & 2 rabbits.  They mostly keep away from each other.  Some of the cats get excited by the bunny running and binkies, but it hasn’t seemed to get too bad.  However, I try not to let them out together unattended…just b/c I caught Max (fat cat) holding Leo down w/ one paw and tasting I mean licking him.  Jessica is usually too fast to be caught by the cats.  Since then I got a little shy about rocking that boat.  Plus the rabbits have both peed on the cat beds or near their litterboxes.  Jessica likes to potty in their litterbox.  Some of our cats also love to rub their face in the rabbit hay…it’s like they think it’s catnip…totally makes me laugh.

First: Bunnies are definitely not rodents, they are lagomorphs.
                                                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagomorpha

Second: No problem with cats and bunnies, we’ve got 4 bunnies and 3 cats. And now a dog. Right now we’ve got more concern with the dog and the bunnies as she’s still getting used to them.

                                                – Annette
