        Hey guys,

Just wondered. I was reading MimzyMum’s thread on the teeth trimming and there was talk about Metacam. It sounded like your bunnies are usually given Metacam after a regular trim?

I’m asking because vets here are not very generous about giving pain meds to rabbits. Jack didn’t even get anything after having his incissors pulled out (and Molly had to recover from her spay also without pain med – but at least the clinic promised me they would reconsider this policy as I got really angry)   As I think he might be needing a trim on Wednesday, I just need to know if I should stand my ground and demand that he gets Metacam for a few days afterwards?

Yes! I always give metacam for a few days after the trim until Pepe starts eating again. Definitely demand it – those teeth have to be pretty tender after being worked on and since the metacam is an anti-inflammatory it would be beneficial to give to help with any residual swelling or tenderness.

Sarita, can Metacam keep for months in the refrigerator and still maintain its efficacy? If so, Karla might only need to pay for it once and get a good sized dose, then have it in the house for the next trim without going through the hassle again.

Metacam does not need to be refrigerated – I never do. However, metacam is one of those medications that CANNOT be used past it’s expiration date. I just checked the new 32 ml bottle I purchased from my vet and it’s good until 07/11 and I know I will use it before then. I usually get the even larger bottle but they were out. I used it every trim for Pepe and I used to use it daily for Maxine so I may not need that larger bottle (for now anyway).

If your vet rebottles this for you – which is usual – then ask them to check the bottle for the expiration date if they don’t post that on the bottle.

Thanks you guys. Great info. I will defintely see if a can get a bottle for future usage, but not sure if I can though…it would be great though for days like this, where Jack clearly could use some while we are waiting for his appointment at the vet.

The vet shouldn’t have a problem selling you metacam-it’s more like tylenol and not like a narcotic pain med. If your vet is stubborn perhaps another vet could sell you the metacam if you’ve seen them before? I definitely agree-it works wonders for them and is really necessary after surgery
