Memory Foam Bath Mat

Hello guys!

So Bunny lives in a plastic bottom cage when I’m not home, which is tough on her mini-rex feeties. I originally had a grass mat, and a cat bed in there to help but she wasn’t fond of either and would move them around to sleep on the plastic or pee all over the cat bed. It’s been a bit of a nightmare trying to find something she won’t eat or pee all over. 

So a couple of weeks ago I got this very small memory bath mat (link below) which she at first peed on, but once I washed it once she left it alone. however, it wasn’t a very good size for her set -up. Also, she didn’t destroy the top at all, but finally discovered the grip-material bottom and tore at one corner to the foam! 

Well, my vet told em I needed to make more soft places for her because the plastic bottom she could still get to, and our horrible rug was making her feet start to get a little sore in spots (nothing bad yet just some little bald spots) So, today, I went to Walmart to get some velcro to keep the mat down and to look for some fleeces etc. Instead I found they are now carrying the same mat but bigger, Almost the exact dimensions of the cage bottom! So I got that and some velcro and have attached it to her cage bottom. It’s easy to vacuum and wash also. I am so excited and wanted to share it with anyone looking for something similar. It’s such a soft material and obviously cushiony!

I am keeping the smaller one also for in the room for her to rest on along with her cat beds and grass mats (which she doesn’t pee on outside of her cage!)

I’m glad they’re working for Bunny! I’d wondered about using those for bunnies actually, but was worried about the foam inside. Hodari has e. cuniculi, and when she was sick with it last year, having trouble keeping her balance, etc. the vet wanted us to have something cushiony in her cage. Well, we just put down a thick blanket for her, which she kept rolling up and otherwise being mad about. I’d like a better solution if, God forbid, the e.c. comes back again. Thanks for sharing.

Nicolene posted about these too and seems to be a fan. Good to know they’re easily washable.

If Bunny does start taking to moving it, perhaps 1 tile on the top might help? She might be looking for a cool place to rest on. Plus it would help cover some edges where she might be able to pull the mat up. Hopefully you won’t have that problem though.

I will probably just buy a smaller one to test out and then if he leaves it alone and then cover his room in it!

jerseygirl, that’s a really good idea about the tile! I think she would like a cool place to lay. Is there a particular type of tile I should look for, or can I just go into a hardware store and pick one up I like?
I actually velcroed the mat down so she can’t pull it up, but I can for cleaning etc. So far everything has been good with it, she hasn’t peed on it at all and seems comfy. I hope it is helping her feet.

I don’t think the type of tile matters much. I use them upside down so the rough side gives them traction. Only thing is i have to scrub them when I clean them. If you’re worried that side would be too abrasive for her Rex feet you might be able to find a textured tile.

I’m new to bunny ownership, but on one of the first ventures out of the crate that Stu had, he went straight to my husband’s memory foam bath mat and jumped around on it. It was actually the first time we saw him binky and my husband thought something was wrong with him. They must really like the feel of the memory foam under their little feet. :p

I am glad you found something that works. I was actually looking a while back to get something like this for my disabled bunny. My other rabbit who isn’t disabled has a straw mat in her cage and a big litterbox she loves to lay on. She is a chewer so putting a blanket wouldn’t work.

I LOVE these! My rex has bald footsies too. I bought mine at Costco. They are huge and only $12.. I just bought 3 more for our new furniture style cage that is in the making.. wall to wall memory foam!! Spoiled senseless! I wash mine once a week and it looks brand new again. I vacuum it with my shop vac every evening. It catches and holds so much hair that I swear it cuts down on the dust/fur “bunnies” around my house.. The ones I buy are big and heavy and they will occasionally dig at the sides but they can’t get it to flip over.

Ps. When the red spots heal to be just bald spots paint them once a week with “new skin” liquid bandaid. I checked with my vet and he said they used to do something similar with hunting dogs’ feet. It works great for us, we haven’t had any bleeding feet since we started.

Awesome, that liquid bandaid is a really good idea, I’ll have to look for some when I’m at the store next time!

My bunny likes to lick the memory foam mat. Is this bad? Or is it only bad if they chew it?

Its only bad if he eats it. Rabbits like to lick soft stuff and fabrics.
