pinky had another bout stasis over the weekend. of course this happens friday night of a long weekend.
anyways… she was fine in the morning but by evening i could tell just by glancing at her posturing that she was in pain. when i picked her up she was even slightly limp – scary. i think she was in too much pain to object to being picked up like she normally does. i put her against my chest and gently massaged the sides of her belly and was happy to hear/feel several ‘gurgles’ and ‘rumbles’ from her belly so i was optimistic that it was passing tho she still wouldn’t eat.
i checked on her an hour later before i went to bed and her bottom was all wet which alarmed me a bit. she mustve still been in too much pain to clean herself. i found some metacam (sp?) that was prescribed to her after her spay and gave her a dose. also had some meds that were prescribed to her for this very thing (metaclopramide i think) and gave her a dose of that too. the directions were to give her the dosage amount 2x per day until normal poops. after i googled metaclopramide and dispite that it was specifically prescribed for pinky at another time i read that it wasn’t good to give rabbits this
saturday morning the bowl of greens she wouldn’t eat before were all gone
and she seemed ravenous for her morning pellets as usual but she only ate a few mouthfuls. an hour or so later she was cleaning herself and by noon the pellets were gone and fresh poops in the litter. phew.
so it seems the single dose of metacam and stasis meds got her through this bout more quickly than the last time even tho she seemed in worse pain. the metacam is nearly finished but i’d sure like to have some handy if this happens again. i am wondering if anyone’s vet is receptive to prescribing pain meds for occasional use? i’m thinking about asking my vet about this but want to avoid having to pay for a visit.
