› FORUM › HABITATS AND TOYS › Maybe a indoor bun?!?
Well, as most of you know my parents refused to let my poor outside bun live inside..
Well they’ve warmed up to the idea..and said maybe they could work out a plan with me.
So anyways I’m back on what I need to do to get my room bunny proofed, and I need to start to think about
habitats, I would like to see your buns living space to show my parents ideas! Thanks, and have a binky of a day.
Yay! I’m so happy to hear that
One of my rabbits lives free range in my room and is brought into the bunny playroom every night to run around. The other two live in a x-pen and are given free range of the house most of the time.
This is an iPod quality picture of the x-pen when we still had a carpet under it, now we have plastic mats. Also excuse the mess it was during a bonding session:
Having a x-pen is nice because it can also be used for supervised outside time in the summer.

Thanks for sharing! The problem I may have with a x pen is that my cat likes to knock things over..and he usually stays in my room. I was thinking maybe my bathroom will be a good place since its quite big. Ill post pictures of it when I arrive home.
That’s such great news!
If he stays in your bathroom you can just put a baby gate in the door. It would be even easier than dealing with x-pens or a NIC cage (also, cheaper
). Tile floor is easy enough to keep clean, just put his food, litter box and whatnot in there and you’re set!
Just make sure to keep the toilet seat lid down ![]()
Good one, Monkeybun!! ![]()
Woot!!! Wonderful job you are doing-sounds very promising!!

I think I want to do a C&C cage..and put those puzzle type mats down. I want a fairly big size ..cause he wont be able to foam free while I’m gone for school. Can someone tell me what size it should be..and link me to the cubes to make it. Thanks.
My parents want him to have a cage, if it was up to me I would do just the bathroom as his place.
Your parents may warm up to the idea of letting him live in one room over time. When I first got my rabbits they all lived in hutches (indoors) because we had never considered allowing them free roam of a room and we had no place to put a x-pen. Now we really can’t imagine ever having rabbits in cages. Over time your parents may adjust to the idea and actually advocate for rabbits in their everyday lives. It may take awhile, but after a few years of your rabbit being a house bun, it will sink in ![]()
I would absolutely NOT let him free roam. He needs to be in some type of cage when you are not around to supervise. He is a young rabbit, and as of now, unneutered. Rabbits can be very destructive to furniture, walls, cabinets, baseboards, wood trim, carpeting, etc. If your parents allow him to live inside, you need to take EVERY precaution to protect their home. This includes having a sturdy cage or pen, and as I said, supervised playtime. I don’t doubt that your parents would have no hesitation putting him back outside if something gets destroyed in the house.
Your job is to decide on some type of cage/pen that will provide enough space for him and be comfortable when you are not home to let him out. Dog xpens work the best, in my opinion. They are very sturdy and easy to clean, plus they can be folded and moved around as necessary. Your other option is to make a NIC condo. I don’t like them, but some people have used them with success.
Beka, I think she said that he won’t be free roaming, he’ll be living in a C & C cage.
That is great! I had the same problem with my parents. It took them forever for me to have them indoors. Let me tell you, it wont be easy! I had many days with tears thinking my rabbits would be sent back outdoors but they never did! My number one tip is to CLEAN! Clean everything every day (including the litter box). As long as I did that, I was fine. It may be a LOT of work (believe me) but it is only until your parents feel better about the rabbit staying indoors. Let me know if you need any further tips!
If you make a condo then the minimum size is a 2ftx4ft. But of coarse, the bigger, the better! Also if you have a bigger bunny then it would have to be bigger ![]()
That is fantastic news here is a picture of sunshines cage!
Really hope you’re able to get him inside! This is the one I built for mine. Unfortunately it’s only a 2×3 grids & 4 tall, but she gets a lot of free roam. If you have room to make something bigger, that would be more ideal
Good luck to you!
Mimzy, that’s a very nice condo! Those levels look very well built. If I may make one small suggestion… if possible, remove and rotate one of the levels 180 degrees so the floor opening is in the front of the condo. It’s not a good idea to have floor openings directly on top of each other because there is the risk that your bun might miscalculate and fall clear to the bottom of the condo. Since your condo is rectangular tho (and not an odd shape), you should just be able to flip it around.
It looks like there is some type of ramp under each of Mimzy’s cages floor openings that lead down to the next level, this probably helps prevent the rabbit from falling straight through if it miscalculated.
Oh, there is! I didn’t notice in the picture!
Oh yes! There are ramps for her
I had actually debated for a while if I wanted ramps or just things for her to hop up and down. With the space I had to work with, the ramps worked out better. I put the ramps on top of each other because I felt it gave her more room.
Ashley, any luck yet with the indoor bunny? ![]()
