Maybe a bad bout of Gas?

I’ve been overall pretty lucky so far with BunBun since we rescued her last October… as far as tummy issues go, she has been relatively easy going. She has been an active happy hay eater, always ready for a treat with begging bunny eyes and posturing… only once or twice did I see slight tummy troubles when we were beginning to add veggies into her diet… she mainly was only given pellets before coming to us.

Today however, mid evening I started to see some things that were concerning me… she was just living flat at 8 pm, and I know that usually by that time, she wants something, food or attention… but she was eating her hay actively even just an hour before. So I got her her dinner salad and she showed no interest at all… didn’t even raise her head after sniffing at it. At that point, I became worried and treat tested her with a Craisin and nothing! I quickly noticed that she kept getting up to reposition herself and arching her back so her tummy would press against the floor, etc. All the typical signs of gas I have read so often abt here on the forums.

She won’t let me give her the gas drops… I had to resort to trying to get as much as I could on her fur around her lips and let her lick it off her precious coat. There is something that I am noticing in addition to her pressing her tum into the floor and constant repositioning herself… she seems to get up often from her laying flat or huddled position and lift her tail as if she was trying to go to the bathroom, but nothing is coming out. Is this also gas or should I be more worried, more quickly?

I’m planning on staying up quite a bit of the night to watch her…

It does sound like gas, or something working it’s way through her GI tract. I saw one of mine do this just last week. Seemed like he was trying to toilet but nothing happening. Then did some odd posturing when he was on the rug. I gave simethicone as precaution.
He was back to himself before too long anyway. He’s has some poops strung together with fur lately, and nibbling on blanket, so I was afraid he’d ingested part of that.

Try give BunBun another lot of simethicone an hour after the first lot. I really think it has some lubricating properties also. It’s a type of  silicon oil, I think. You might be able to get her to drink more. Have you tried making the hay tea before?

Update: it’s now been abt 6 hours since she has last eaten anything and she has only pooped about 4 poops during the same time frame. She is still behaving like she is in complete discomfort and seems scared or stressed by my touch. She has peed tiny bits but it is the middle of the night now and I’m scared to death for my BunBun. I have no car and my list of family is about as small as my transportation options. The nearest Rabbit Savy vet is not that far away but I must find someone willing to debunk thier day to take us there. I’m so scared for my little girl.

Have not used hay tea as of yet, but I did read the post on it. She is letting me pet her and give her slight tummy massages… nothing big as lately she has been a little more of a “don’t try to pick me up or hold me for anything” kind of girl. She is completely stand-off ish to me offering her any and all food. I even tried grapes and watermelon since they have such high fluid content.

Update to the last Update:

I did say I was going to stay up most of the night and I certainly have. At 3:30am I once again began gentle tummy massages and I was able to see that BunBun was more receptive and even beginning to tooth purr. By 4 she had loosened up her hunch quite a bit and was no longer looking as stressed and in pain. 4:30, she began eating again… nibbling on her pellets first and then I offered her a wet piece of butter lettuce. She happily ate it. By that time, I began to see my baby girl again… she was getting her energy back! Enough to show me, “Get that water bowl out of my face!” As she pushed it away. She began actively cleaning herself and eating more pellets. 5 am, she pooped! Yay!

I started hearing some gurgling when she began eating but in my honest and humble opinion that was peristalsis sounds and since I wasn’t hearing anything at all when she hadn’t eaten in 8 hours, I was somewhat relieved to hear movement.

I am now hearing the first birds of the morning wake up… maybe now I can try and nap for an hour or so.

Thank You! I have to admit I stayed up all night massaging her belly like a doting slave… more than I have ever done for my own child… ? but he can voice his distress and most likely wouldn’t go straight downhill from 24 hours of gas…

She is eating again but she has not wanted to eat any hay… for today I honestly was happy to see her eat anything but I would like to see her return to her healthy hay eating habits. Is it normal for for bunnies to not return directly to eating hay after stomach distress?
