Hi everyone. I used to have two rabbits called Bugsy and Bullet, sadly Bullet passed away last year, then me and my partner moved house, so it is only now, we have got Bugsy some friends so she won’t be alone. I was advised to get a male and a female to bond with Bugsy. Both new rabbits, mustard and peanut, are still quite young. They are 10 weeks and 8 weeks old. How would you suggest I bond them to make a trip of rabbits? Thanks x

I’m sorry to hear about Bullet, and if you feel Bugsy is ready and would benefit from a new companion, it’s great that it’s something you are doing.

I am a bit confused about the advice you received, as bonding a trio (three rabbits) is harder than bonding only two, from what I’ve read. Fast forward several months from now (when mustard and peanut are fixed), you actually need to bond each of them together. Mustard and Peanut, being so young, will not be able to stay together for very much longer. In a couple weeks, hormones will develop in one or both of them, making cohabitation impossible. So for at least 2-3 months, all three of your rabbits need to be kept in separate pens.

BB forums does have an active user who bonded three rabbits (Sirius&Luna), so they may be able to provide some details guidance. For now, all I can advise is making sure you can accommodate three-rabbit separation for the next few months while mustard and peanut grow up.

… Unsure if you named all your rabbits, but they all have wonderful names.

            Hi!

I have a bonded trio, but agree with Wick, it’s strange advice as its not the easiest way of creating bonded bunnies. That said, a bonded trio is extremely cute! I’ve heard that sometimes you end up with a bonded pair and another rabbit sort of tagging along, but mine all spend equal-ish amounts of time together and I can’t see anyone being left out.

Unfortunately you won’t be able to bond them until all are neutered and spayed, so I image it’s at least 4/5 months away until the babies can be neutered/spayed. Is Bugsy spayed?

For now, I would recommend housing them all separately, and swapping them between cages every other day, so that they all get used to the scents of each other. This is known as prebonding. Once they’re neutered, they need to be given a month for hormones to drain, in which time you can continue prebonding. THEN you can get to the actual bonding.

I knew that one of my bunnies was going to be very difficult, so I started on the easy pair, and then added her once I knew there wouldn’t be trouble. I also experimented with the separate pairings to get them all used to each other. In all, it took me about a month of bonding sessions to call them a trio, but I had been prebonding for months before that. I would be happy to give you more tailored advice when you get closer to it
