› Forum › RAINBOW BRIDGE › Mathias didn’t make it..
I took Bosse and Mathias to the vet today for their nuter, and I talked with the vet for a long time and she seemed incredibly competent, and she had a lot of experience with nutering rabbits. She was swedish (I live in Norway), where they are known to have amazing vets, and she started up her own practice in the town that I live in. She reccomended gass anesthetics, but as a student I simply couldn’t afford it. Here in Norway, its 4x the price an I didn’t have that kind of money.
Basicly Mathias just didn’t make it. He made it through the nuter itself, but his heart stopped fifteen minutes later. They tried to revive him, but they weren’t able to… I am just in bits right now. I have taken Bosse home, he is drinking and eating already. We came home about 45 minutes ago. He is trying to jump around and is active in between resting. I have him on the couch with me, with lots of fleece blankets around. He hasn’t pooped yet, but I think it will come. The vet gave him something to keep his digestion going. I was just wondering if I should let him be in his cage, or if it is ok if i keep him on the couch? I really want to keep him close, because when in his cage, he tends to keep to himself.
All in all, I am just in bits. I don’t know what to do with myself. Mathias was the outgoing one, the cheeky one. The one that boosted Bosse’s confidense. Bosse is pretty shy, and sceptical to new things, but if he saw mathias do something, he knew he could do it too. Im just really worried what’s going to happen to Bosse now.. I don’t think I’ve ever cried this much.
the last photo was taken mid-bink <3
We miss you so much, Mathias…
Mathias is the white one for those who don’t know.
Hugs to you! I’m so sad to hear this. I would keep Bosse in his familiar space right now until he starts eating and just give him lots of attention.
I’m so sorry!! *Hugsss* You gave him a loving home and a beautiful little life – binky free Mathias x
I’m so sorry Binky Free little Mathias!
Thank you guys! I can’t really understand that he is gone..
I put Bosse in his cage after he started moving around a bit. He has now eaten some, had a little water, and he has also pooped a little No pees yet though, but I’m not stressing it. He is relaxing in his cage and seems fine. He has licked (groomed) me a little as well, whenever i have come to give him a cuddle. What I am dreading though is when Bosse realizes that Mathias isn’t here, and I’m worried he will get depressed. But as of right now, Bosse seems to be doing really good.
Update: Bosse has peed
I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m glad Bosse is recovering well. ((healing vibes for Bosse)) *Hugs to you*
Binky free Mathias!
Thank you FrankieFlash!
I am so sorry for your loss, Svandis. Binky free, Mathias – you will see him again some day. Give Bosses lots of love…..
Thank you so much Theresa, such kind words
I was wondering if I might sleep outside bosse’s cage tonight, on a matress. Or should I give him space?
I’m so sorry for your loss. Binky Free Mathias.
As for what happened, it’s seems to be just one of those things. One of our relatives had her bun spayed, and she didn’t survive. The vet is one of the best in the world, an exotics specialist, travels all over world, etc., and it still happened. Anesthetics of any type are just hard on the system, even for humans. Give Bosse lots of love and heal each other.
Thank you T-Bun!
And yeah, I could see that the vet was really disappointed, and she was very sad for losing Mathias. But they had done everything that they could.
I will, again thanks
So heartbreaking for you! I’m really sorry Svandis.
Absolutely sleep near Bosse’s cage. I think it could be comforting for him and perhaps for you too.
Binky Free Mathias! Beautiful little bun and well loved.
Thanks Jerseygirl. I will do that. I did it yesterday aswell, before going to the vet. So atleast i got one night close to mathias before he went. Bosse seems okay, but he isn’t as up-and-going as he usually is. Ofc this is probably the anesthesia still in his system. I’ll just have to wait and see how things work out.
I am so sorry to hear about Mathias. We are often warned of the risk of any procedure, but it still comes as a shock when the worst happens. He may have had a weak heart – never easily diagnosed and not uncommon in bunnies – and it may have happened at any time. You and Bosse gave him a loving home and sweet life. It’s all any of us can do.
Sleeping near Bosse is just fine. It will comfort you and will probably comfort him as well. He will react to Mathias’ absence, but his grief won’t last and if he is already eating, peeing and pooping, he is out of the woods himself. Just pay him as much attention as you want and let him be with you where he is comfortable. Don’t let him jump for several days though. Keep an eye on his incision site to watch for swelling or redness, but otherwise, don’t worry about crowding him. A bunny who wants to be alone will just hop away. I think the extra attention will make you both feel better.
Thanks for the kind words and the advice Pam! Its really appreciated.
Right now Bosse is relaxing on the little carpet that is usually in their cage. I moved it ut onto the floor, because i was laying a fleece blankets in the cage. He found it out on the floor and probably smelled mathias on it. They used to lay on the carpet alot in their cage. Its so sweet and sad at the same time. But at least he is venturing out on the floor
Its 11:51 pm, getting ready for bed (or rather matress). I’m just leaving bosse’s cage open so he can roam around as he wants, I’ll be sleaping right by his cage. There are no cords or dangerous things for him to chew on, and i want him to be able to walk about.
This has been a long day. Thank you all for leaving comments and kind thoughts. Writing here on binkybunny has helped me a lot today. I will probably keep updating the thread the next couple of days, if I have something to write about, or if there are any updates.
Bosse is doing great. He hasn’t been biting on his stitches and he is hopping around, eating and drinking (I think I may have been overfeeding him…)
There have been some slight changes in his mood or something though. He seems calmer, but at the same time a bit more timid/distrustful than usual. Adding to that, he also comes over to me more than he used to, and he seems to be wanting contact with me (just on his own terms, preferrably when I’m lying on the ground), and thats good. So I think he is just adjusting. He probably needs some time to fully bond to me, as I don’t think he was fully bonded to me while mathias was here, he was more or less just bonded to him. So this will be an exciting time.
And sleeping next to his cage while he was able to have the run of the living room worked great. He rotated on where he wanted to sleep, and he hopped about some, and came over to me many times to give me kisses, and even let me pet him a lot <3 It was a great experience, so worth the lack of sleep.
Gonna cath up on sleep and sleep in my bed tonight, so ill be able to stay awake at school.
Quick question, do you think bosse can sense my sadness? Am I making it worse for him by babying him, do you think he can sense that i feel bad for him?
I am so sorry to hear about your loss 🙁 I understand how tough it is. My buns went in for their neuter today and two came home and are doing well. Baby our female will be spayed in the morning and be home tomorrow. so I am still sweating on that.
Binky free Mathias… My heart has joined the thousand, for my friend stopped running today…
Thank you for your condolences Bullrider!
I am sure everything will go well for your Baby, I will keep her in my thoughts
Would you update me here tomorrow on how it went?
I sure will. my heart and prayers go out to you.
Binky free, Mathias. I’m sorry for your loss, Svandis. Sometimes the animals we love so much have to cross the Rainbow Bridge sooner than we’d like.
I had my bunny in for his routine molar trim today and my appointment got delayed an hour for an emergency surgery on a ferret. The ferret had a fever, wasn’t eating, and the owner thought it had eaten a foreign object. They did surgery (with gas anesthesia) and found nothing out of the ordinary. When recovering from the operation about 10 minutes later, the ferret went into shock and passed away. The vets did everything they could but could not revive it. It was heartbreaking. Please don’t blame yourself for what happened to your little bunny. Hugs to you and Bosse.
I’m so sorry to hear. Sometimes they just give out on us and leave us too soon. I’m sure Bosse is very happy you are being there for him during his grieving period. I bet he can tell you are sad, but I wouldn’t worry about that upsetting him. He may not know what sad is, but knows you are different than normal. I hope you both lean on each other while you recover your loss. *hugs* and thinking of you both.
I, too, am very sorry for your loss It’s never easy having to go through this and I just love that pic of Mathias in that little bed, like a lamb<3
Thoughts and prayers out to you and you just keep loving on Bosse, if he doesn’t want it, he will hop away. I’m glad to hear Bosse is doing well, I’m thinking being there for him during this time would be a great bonding time between the both of you. **hugs**
@Svandis, Baby is home, and I am watching her like a hawk. she hasnt pooped or peed yet. and isnt eating yet, trying to be patient at this time and not panic…
Thanks for all the comments guys <3
I’m keeping close to bosse, but he only comes over to me whenever i have treats for him, and then runs away from me again. I think I’m gonna start a topic on HOUSE RABBIT Q & A, asking for tips on how to bond with a timid bunny. The breeder I bought him and Mathias from told me that when he was still at the her farm, she had let him out in the outdoor enclosure, but she had forgotten that her flemish giant was out there, and Bosse god attacked and bitten hard in the neck. So I think that might be why he is so often scared/timid.
@Bullrider, it’s great that she made it, and I understand that you are worrying, but I’m sure she will do great. The worst is over by now. Thanks for the update! And feel free to update further on her eating etc
Bosse has been doing a few binkies and zooms today, and i think he is doing better. Had some bonding time with him on the floor for a few hours today while I was getting some school work done
haha as I’m writing this Bosse started doing all these crazy zooms and binkies, running all over the living room!
But he has these.. “phases”? like he is in a trance, where he will just sit in his cage, in one place and is super aware of everything, and he seems a little stressed out when he is in this phase. It is only a few times a day, and he hasn’t done it before, only since mathias died..
It could be that he’s missing Mathias – or it could just be normal zone out behavior. My Roscoe will do the same thing – he just did it this morning after a half hour of binkies. He was just sitting staring and zoning out. He wouldn’t respond to my voice or anything – or even the shaking of his treat cup. So I got a piece of red leaf lettuce and waved it under his nose a few times, and he finally came out of it and took a bite – and then almost shook himself and started to eat in earnest.
I kind of think of it as bunny daydreaming…..
I am so sorry for you loss, hugs and comforting feeling being sent your way. You’ll see him again my friend. Binky free Mathias.
Theresa – That sounds like what Bosse has been doing Thank you. Guess I’m just being a bit paranoid, analyzing his behavior to look for any signs of depression or sadness.
Bumble Fly – thank you so much <3
